HICKORY - Howard Lee Gilbert, 74, of Hickory, died Friday, Jan. 19,
2007, after a period of declining health. Born May 7, 1932, in
Catawba County, he was the son of the late Henry Boyd and Rosa Lee
Propes Gilbert. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death
by a brother, Floyd Ray Gilbert, and an infant grandchild. He was a
lifelong member of Millers Lutheran Church, served in the U.S. Air
Force during the Korean conflict, was a lifetime member of American
Legion Post 48, and was a member of the Catawba County Firefighters'
Auxiliary and Memorial Committees. He retired from Gilbert Machinery
Moving of Hickory, which he owned and operated for 30 years. He is
survived by his wife, Betty D. Gilbert of the home; three daughters
and sons-in-law, Betty and Eric Hall of Conover, Debbie and Tim
Bolick of Hickory and Sandy and Bob Krogman of Conover; a sister and
brother-in law, Roaline G. and Hershel Canipe of Hickory; a
sister-in-law, Della Gilbert of Hickory; a brother-in-law and
sister-in-law, Ronald and Janice Harney of Chepachet, R.I.; a
sister-in-law, Ruth Miller of Cameron, N.Y.; five grandchildren; two
great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. The funeral
will be held at 1 p.m. today, Monday, Jan. 22, 2007, at Millers
Lutheran Church in Hickory, with the Revs. Bob Alle and John Mobieus
officiating. Burial will follow in Catawba Memorial Park, with
military rites. The family received friends from 6 to 8 Sunday at
Catawba Funeral Home in Hickory. Memorials may be made to Millers
