James Henry "Jim" HUFFMAN was born on 24 July 1934 in Catawba County, North Carolina. He died on 7 March 2011 at the age of 76 in Catawba County, North Carolina. He was buried in Claremont City Cemetery, Claremont, NC (St. Marks & Calvary Luth.). His obituary appeared as follows: CLAREMONT James "Jim" Henry Huffman, Sr., 76, of Claremont, died the afternoon of March 7, 2011, following a period of declining health. Jim was the eldest son of the late John Henry and Elma Loftin Huffman. Jim was born July 24, 1934. He was a life-long member of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church. He graduated from Claremont High School in 1952. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict aboard the USS Bennington. Jim worked as an electrician. He was devoted to his many passions including God, his family and his music. To be in his presence was a joy that his friends and family will forever cherish. Jim had a smile that could light up the room and there was always a twinkle in his eye for friends and strangers alike. Jim was co-founder of the Tarheel Travelers with his life-long friend, Mr. Dee Harris. They spent more than 50 years playing country and gospel music together and entertaining folks across the state with their lively sounds and good humor. In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by an infant brother, Lonnie Gary Huffman. He was also preceded in death by his good friend and younger brother Hal Davis Huffman. Jim is survived by his beloved wife, helpmate and sweetheart of 57 years, Mrs. Faye Huffman. He also left behind his six children: Linda H. McCoy of Claremont; James H. Huffman, Jr. and wife Trudy of Conover; Gary W. Huffman of Claremont; Janice H. Totherow and husband Darryl of Newton; Bonnie H. Hubbard of Claremont; and Jerry R. Huffman and wife Mona of Conover. Jim was the proud grandfather of 12, including: Branden Long and wife Nicole; Kristen Hoke, Callie Hoke, Marcus Huffman, Lionel Totherow, Megan Hubbard, Garrett Huffman, Alex Hoke, Kadrian Huffman, Hayley Huffman, Cody Totherow, and Hannah Huffman. Jim is also survived by five great-grandchildren, including: Leah Long, Tyler Long, Kassey Luna, Aven Long and Calista Luna. Jim is also survived by his loving sister Loretta H. Hiatt of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; by sister-in-law, Barbara Huffman of Maiden; sister-in-law Betty Dellinger of Newton, sister-in-law Gale Crater of Claremont, and brother-in-law Dale Huffman of Newton. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 10, at 2 p.m. at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Claremont with Rev. Wesley Frye officiating. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service and burial will follow in the Church Cemetery with military graveside honors by the American Legion Post 16 of Newton.
