Her obituary appeared as follows: HICKORY Betty Carole Eckard Lail, 82, passed away Thursday, Sept. 20, 2012, at the Lutheran Home-Hickory after a period of declining health. Betty was born Sept. 28, 1929, in Catawba County, to the late Clyde A. and Merlie Hollar Eckard. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cletus Ray Lail; and a sister, Jo Anne Killian. Surviving are her daughter, Priscilla L. Crouch and husband, Dale, of Hickory; granddaughter, Susan Crouch Ledbetter and husband, Dean, of Wilkesboro; grandson, Darren Ray Crouch and wife, Amy, of Hudson; great-grand-daughter, Grace Caroline Crouch, of Hudson; a sister, Dorothy Sipe and husband, Joe, of Hickory; sisters-in-law, Shirley Sigmon, Wilma Lail, Aileen Benfield, Linda Moretz and Nancy Starnes; brothers-in-law, Bobby Lail and wife, Elaine and Bobby Killian; a special niece, Scottie Sipe Smith and husband, Dale, of Newton; and numerous other nieces and nephews. She was the best Mam-Maw ever. She was a member of Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, where services will be Sunday, Sept. 23, at 4 p.m., with the Rev. Scott Bollinger officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 2 to 3:45 p.m. at Mt. Zion Lutheran Church. Memorials may be made to N.C.
