Her obituary appeared as follows: HICKORY - Gertrude Smith Adkins, 96, of Twenty-sixth Avenue, NE, died Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, at Lutheran Home West after a period of declining health. Born April 26, 1907, in Catawba County, she was a daughter of the late John F. and Mary Seabock Smith. A very active lifetime member of Mount Olive Lutheran Church, she retired as a school teacher for Hickory City Schools. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Richardson Adkins, a sister, and two brothers. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, John R. Adkins and wife, Noelle, of Chapel Hill; a daughter, Linda Isenhour of Chapel Hill; a granddaughter, Anna Fischer and husband, Brad, of Olathe, Kan.; a grandson, Bradley Isenhour and wife, Jenny, of Salt Lake City, Utah; a great-grandson, Keegan Fischer of Olathe, Kan.; a brother, David Lee Smith of Lutheran Home East; and a sister, Virginia Smith Deal of Hickory. The funeral will be conducted by the Revs. David R. Keck and Walter L. Hitchcock at 11 a.m. Thursday at Mount Olive Lutheran Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will be at Hickory Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 tonight. Memorials may be made to Mount Olive Lutheran Church, 2780 North Center St., Hickory, N.C. 28601.
