Marcus Sylvanus DEAL was born on 12 June 1840 in Lincoln (Catawba County), North Carolina.41,163,164,167,647,648,649 He appeared in the census in 1860 in SYLVANUS not listed as living with other family members at 1860 Census..164 He died on 27 May 1904 at the age of 63 in Catawba County, North Carolina.648 Marcus was buried in Eastview Cemetery, Newton, Catawba County, North Carolina. His record in the War Between the States is as follows:650 DEAL, MARCUS SYLVANUS, 1st Lieutenant, Company A, 12th Regiment, N.C. Troops - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a teacher prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 21, April 27, 1861. Mustered in as Private and promoted to Corporal on November 1, 1861. Appointed 2nd Lieutenant on April 15, 1862. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant on May 16, 1864. Present or accounted for until captured at Fisher's Hill, Virginia, September 22, 1864. Confined at Fort Delaware, Delaware, until released on June 17, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance.

North Carolina Troops - 1861-1865 Volume 5, Company A--12th Regiment NC Troops

This company, known as the "Catawba Rifles" was raised in Catawba County and enlisted at Newton on April 27, 1861. It tendered its service to the state and was ordered to Garysburg [N.C.] where it was assigned to this Regiment. The company was mustered in as Captain John Ray's Company and was designated Company K and Company G before it was designated Company A. After it was mustered into the regiment the company functioned as a part of the regiment, and its history for the war period is recorded as a part of the regimental history.

The information contained was compiled principally from company muster rolls, Roll of Honor records, hospital records, prisoner of war records and other primary records, supplemented state pension applications, United Daughters of the Confederacy records and postwar rosters and histories, all provided useful information.
