Her obituary appeared as follows: NEWTON - Ethel McGee Spencer, 94, of Carrillon Assisted Living in Newton, died Sunday, July 11, 2004, at Catawba Valley Medical Center. Born Feb. 8, 1910, in Catawba County, she was the daughter of the late David and Hattie Brady McGee. She was a member of North Newton Baptist Church and a homemaker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Spencer; two brothers, John McGee and Bob McGee; and three sisters, Clara Spencer, Grace Setzer and Eula Wesson. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Mildred Walton and husband, Jerry, of Conover; two sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth Spencer and wife, Phyllis, of Newton and Carl Spencer and wife, Shelva, of Catawba; a sister, Edna Black of Conover; two sisters-in-law, Helen McGee of Conover and Ruby Spencer of Newton; three grandsons, Kevin Spencer, Greg Spencer and Brent Spencer; three granddaughters, Carla Spencer-Barry, Dawn Kilby and Beverly Foster; two stepgrandsons, Jerry Knopp and Allen Walton; five stepgranddaughters, Tammy Longfellow, Kendal Stearns, Donna Walton, Ann Adams and Barbara Pate; five great-grandsons, Christopher Spencer, Ryan Spencer, Sean Kilby, Josh Foster and Kyle Barry; two great-granddaughters, Christy Foster and Annie Barry; 13 stepgreat-grandchildren; four stepgreat-great-grandchildren. A service of remembrance will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 15, 2004, at North Newton Baptist Church in Newton. The Revs. Lloyd King and Merlin Batt will officiate and burial will be in Catawba Memorial Park. Her great-grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at the funeral home and at other times will be at the home of Kenneth Spencer, 1396 Ruby Spencer St., (off Mt. Olive Church Road) in Newton. Memorials may be made to North Newton Baptist Church, 316 W. Twenty-first St., Newton, N.C. or to Palliative CareCenter and Hospice of Catawba Valley, 3975 Robinson Road, Newton, N.C. 28658.
