Troops - Born in Catawba County* where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 20, October 31, 1861. Mustered in as Private. Promoted to Corporal on April 18, 1862. Promoted to Sergeant on April 6, 1863. Present or accounted for through October, 1864. Surrendered at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, April 9, 1865. Alfred died on 17 April 1927 at the age of 86 in Catawba County, North Carolina.⁶⁹⁵ He was buried in St. Peter's Lutheran Church cemetery, north of Conover, Catawba County, NC.
