Mary Lucille HERMAN was born on 28 April 1909. She died on 28 June 2011 at the age of 102 in Abernethy Laurels, Newton, North Carolina. Her obituary appeared as follows: NEWTON Mary Lucile Harris, 102, of Abernethy Laurels Continuing Care Community, Newton, formerly of New London, died of natural causes on Sunday, June 26, 2011. A memorial service will be held today, June 28, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Spirit Place at Abernethy Laurels in Newton. Born in Catawba County on April 28, 1909. Mrs. Harris was the daughter of the late James Lawrence Herman and Essie Catherine Coulter Herman of Newton. One of their eight children, she was preceded in death by one brother and six sisters. After graduating from the N.C. College for Women (now UNCG) in 1930, she came to New London to teach. Shortly after arriving in New London, she met Ben Harris and married him in June 1934. Mr. Harris preceded her in death on Jan. 8, 1975. A resident of Stanly County for 70 years, Mrs. Harris taught high school science at New London High School from 1930 to 1936. In 1948 and 1949, she served on the New London School Board, and in 1952 she returned to teaching at New London Elementary School where she taught until 1966. From 1967 to 1971, she taught at Aquadale Elementary School and retired from teaching in 1971. She was a member of the Stanly County Retired Teachers Association. Mrs. Harris was an active member of New London United Methodist Church where she taught adult Sunday school classes and was a member of the Women's Society of Christian Service. She moved to Abernethy Laurels in 2000. Mrs. Harris was survived by her two daughters, Mary Ben Harris of Simpsonville, Ky., and Betsy Ann Harris of Washington D.C. Dorothy Belle HERMAN was born on 4 March 1918 in Catawba County, North Carolina. She died on 8 January 2002 at the age of 83 in Abernethy Laurels, Newton, North Carolina. Dorothy B. Herman, 86, of 520 Shuford Circle Drive, Newton, NC died Tuesday, January 8, 2002 at Abernethy Center.
Born March 4, 1918 in Catawba County, she was the daughter of the late James Lawrence and Essie Coulter Herman.
She was a lifelong member of Grace Reformed United Church of Christ in Newton. She enjoyed a career in education as an elementary teacher for 42 years. She was formerly with Thornton Elementary School in Newton.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Willie Coulter Herman, Blanche Herman, and one brother, John Richard Herman.
Survivors include, 3 sisters, Sarah Herman Rhodes of Newton, formerly of Asheville, NC, Lucile Herman Harris of Newton, formerly of New London, NC, and Katherine Herman Caldwell of Newton, formerly of Charlotte, NC; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM, Thursday, January 10, 2002 at Spirit Place located at the Abernethy Center. The Reverend David Bowling and Reverend Al Mullen will officiate.
The family will receive friends following the memorial service on Thursday, January 10, 2002.
