Her obituary appeared as follows: NEWTON - Irene Magness Herman, 94, of Leonard Avenue, died Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, at Abernethy Laurels. Born Nov. 19, 1915, in Catawba County, she was the daughter of the late George D. and Mary Jane Fye Herman. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Sarah Frances Phillips. She was a member of St. Paul's Reformed Church in Newton. After serving in the U.S. Army's Women's Auxiliary Service during World War II, Irene returned home to Newton to work her family farm. She dedicated her life to helping her family, and took care of each until their death. She is survived by several cousins. A service of remembrance will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 25, 2010, at St. Paul's Reformed Church. Chaplain Lawrence Bolick will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Paul Memorial Park. Her friends may visit from 1 to 1:45 p.m. Monday at the church. Memorials may be made to St. Paul's Reformed Church, 3562 Startown Road, Newton, N.C. 28658. Her obituary appeared as follows: NEWTON - Sarah Frances Herman Phillips, 86, of Abernethy Laurels, Newton, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007. Born Sept. 20, 1920, in Catawba County, she was the daughter of the late George Dick Herman and Mary Jane Fye Herman. She was a member of St. Paul's Reformed Church and was a retired nurse. Survivors include a son, Gerald D. Phillips of Crystal River, Fla.; a sister, Irene Herman of Newton; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. A Service of Remembrance will be held at 2 p.m. today, Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2007, at the Spirit Place of Abernethy Laurels. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2007, in St. Paul's Memorial Park, Newton. The Rev. Dr. Stephen Disher and Chaplain Larry Bolick will officiate at both services. The family will receive friends prior to the service, at the funeral home, from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul's Reformed Church, 3562 Startown Road, Newton, N.C. 28658.
