She died on 6 December 2009 at the age of 79 in Catawba Valley Medical Center, Hickory, Catawba County, North Carolina. Her obituary appeared as follows: NEWTON - Betty Christopher Simmons, 79, of Newton, died Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009, at Catawba Valley Medical Center. Born April 12, 1930, in Catawba County, she was the daughter of the late Charles L. Christopher and Edna Little Christopher Flowers. Mrs. Simmons was a member of Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ and a volunteer in the gift shop at Catawba Valley Medical Center. She was a former employee of the Catawba County Tax Office in Newton and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Harvey Lee Simmons, and brother, Horace Franklin Christopher. She is survived by her daughter, Sandra Elaine Simmons of Morganton; son, Charles Christopher Simmons and his wife, Kitty, of Hickory; grandchildren, Amy Simmons Adcox and her husband, Eric, and Brian Christopher Simmons; sisters, Martha Christopher Webb of Conover and Linda Kay Flowers of Icard; brothers, Paul M. Flowers of Newton and Clyde Thomas Flowers of Hickory; and many nieces and nephews. A service of remembrance will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009, at Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ, with the Revs. Lonny McSherley and Peggy Stout officiating. Burial will follow in Catawba Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2 to 2:45 p.m. at the church.
