HERMAN was born between September 1828 and 1832 in Lincoln (Catawba County), North Carolina.^{51,52,187,189,195,196} His record in the War Between the States is as follows:¹⁹⁷ HERMAN, E. L., Private, Company A, 12th Regiment, NC Troops - Enlisted in Catawba County on April 1, 1862. Present or accounted for until discharged on January 27, 1863. Reason discharged not reported, North Carolina pension records indicate he was wounded near Richmond, Virginia, in July, 1862. He died before 1911 at the age of 83 in Catawba County, North Carolina. He was buried in Conover City Cemetery, Conover, Catawba, North Carolina. Elkanah served in the military in Civil War, as Private, Co A, 12th Regiment, NC Troops. He enlisted in Catawba Co on 1 Apr 1862, was present or accounted for until discharged on 27 Jan 1863. Reason for discharge was reported; NC pension records indicate he was wounded near Richmond VA in Jul 1862.

Elkanah "Cain or Cany" L. HERMAN and Mahala SETZER were married on 11 December 1851 in Catawba County, North Carolina.¹⁹⁸ Reuben Deal, bondsman Mahala SETZER, daughter of John SETZER and Maria "Mary" (May) [Weidner] WHITENER, was born between 1832 and 1835 in Lincoln (Catawba County), North Carolina.^52,53,199 She died before June 1880 at the age of 48.¹⁸⁷
