Marcus Gentry SETZER Jr.952 was born on 10 February 1919 in Catawba County, North Carolina.2437,2443 He died on 24 July 2007 at the age of 88 in Frye Regional Medical Center, Hickory, Catawba County, NC. He was buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Hickory, Catawba County, North Carolina. His obituary appeared as follows: HICKORY - Marcus G. Setzer Jr., 88, of Hickory, died July 24, 2007, at Frye Regional Medical Center after a two-year period of declining health. Mr. Setzer was born Feb. 10, 1919, in Hickory to the late Gentry Setzer Sr. and Minnie Dora Settlemyre Setzer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Fleta Lucille Setzer Latta Deason. Upon graduating from high school in 1936, Mr. Setzer was offered an apprenticeship as a linotype operator by Mr. L.C. Gifford, owner of the Hickory Daily Record. He retained that position until 1972, when he accepted a civilian position with the U.S. Army as staff adjutant technician for Headquarters, 108th Division (Training) in Charlotte, a position he filled until retirement in 1981. Mr. Setzer was inducted into the U.S. Army on April 5, 1940. After completing basic training, he was assigned to Battery A, 7th Field Artillery Observation Battalion. The unit departed for Europe on April 26, 1944, and was assigned to the XX Corps, Third U.S. Army. Staff Sgt. Setzer was chief of party of a survey team engaging in locating enemy artillery gun positions, and he served in France, Germany and Austria. He was awarded the EAMET Campaign Medal with five bronze service stars for Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe campaigns. Staff Sgt. Setzer was discharged Oct. 4, 1945. On May 30, 1949, Mr. Setzer enlisted as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army Reserve, and on Dec. 3, 1951, Master Sgt. Setzer received an appointment as Warrant Officer (WO) in the U.S. Army Reserve. He was assigned to Headquarters, 108th Division (Training) in Charlotte as an assistant adjutant general. Chief Warrant Officer Four (CW04) Setzer retired Feb. 10, 1979, after serving his country in a military capacity for more than 34 years. During his tenure, he received the Meritorious Service Medal. He is survived by his cousins. A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 26, in Oakwood Cemetery, with the Rev. David Guelzow, pastor of St. Stephens Lutheran Church - Mo. Synod, officiating. Graveside military rites will be conducted by members of American Legion Post 48. Memorials may be made to St. Stephens Lutheran Church - Mo.
