Harold Lee "Hal" FLOWERS , Sr. was born on 25 June 1917 in Hickory, Catawba County, North Carolina. He died on 27 March 2008 at the age of 90 in Chesterfield, Missouri. His obituary appeared as follows: CHESTERFIELD, Mo. - Harold (Hal) Lee Flowers Sr., 90, died March 27, 2008, at his home in Chesterfield. Harold was born June 25, 1917, in Hickory, N.C. He was the son of the late E.L. and Olive Kathryn Flowers of Hickory. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Doris Hexamer Flowers and their two children, Josselyn Moore Moon and husband, Jeff, and Harold (Hal) Flowers Jr.; grandchildren, Susan, Thomas and Jeremy; and great-grandchildren, Michael, Kathryn and Abigail. He also is survived by his two sisters, Margaret F. Cline and Hilda F. Brittain of Hickory, N.C., and many cousins, nieces and nephews. A memorial service with private interment was held at 11 a.m. April 2, 2008, at Ladue Chapel Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Dr. Joe M. Wilson officiating. The family received friends at a reception in the Gathering Place at the church following the service. Harold and Doris have been active members at Ladue Chapel Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder. He served on many local and national boards and councils. He also served as a volunteer at St. Luke's Hospital for many years. Mr. Flowers holds an undergraduate degree from Duke University in electrical engineering and a graduate degree in engineering from the University of Cincinnati, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Tau Beta Pi. He received a BSEE from Duke University in 1938, a MS Engineering from the University of Cincinnati in 1941 and a DSc (hon) from Lenoir-Rhyne College in 1993. He was a research scientist with the Naval Research Lab in Washington from 1942 to 1950, manager, electronic division for Goodyear Aerospace in Akron, Ohio, from 1950 to 1961, director, engineering division for AVCO Electronics in Cincinnati from 1961 to 1963, director to manager of missiles division for McDonnell Douglas Astronautics in St. Louis from 1963 to 1987, and engineering consultant with CP Associates in Washington from 1987 to 2008. He was a member of the advisory board of Mark Twain Bank in Chesterfield, a member of the board of visitors at the Engineering School with Duke University in Durham, N.C., a Fellow IEEE (Fellow Award from Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) and an Associate Fellow with AIAA. His honors and accomplishments consist of him holding patents for Radar Receiver Design and ATRAN Dead Reckoning Navigation System, Phi Beta Kappa, Tau Beta Pi, Distinguished Alumnus (Duke and Cincinnati), Distinguished Service Award (Duke University) and U.S. Navy Civilian Meritorious Award.
