He died on 8 July 2009 at the age of 83 in Merritt Island, Brevard County, Florida. His obituary appeared as follows: MERRITT ISLAND, Fla. -SFC Junius Guy Poovey, (U.S. Army, Retired) passed away at Merritt Island July 8, 2009. He was born Dec. 1, 1925 in Hickory, N.C., to the late Joseph Guy Poovey and Elizabeth Seabock Poovey. He retired from the U.S. Army in 1969, with over 25 years of service. He served in Europe during World War II, in Korea and Vietnam. For heroic service in Korea in 1950, he was awarded the nation's second highest medal, the Distinguished Service Cross. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty Hefner Poovey; two sons, Rick of Hickory, N.C., and Tony of Florida; one daughter, Tina of Florida; two granddaughters, Brittany and Niki of Florida; and a number of aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Junius G. Poovey Jr.; three brothers; and three sisters. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009, in Conover City Cemetery, with the Rev. Michael Kane officiating. Full military honors will be provided by the U. S. Army.
