His obituary appeared as follows: CONOVER - James Franklin Deal, 71, of Third Street, NE, Conover, passed away Monday, Aug. 8, 2005, at Catawba Valley Medical Center. Born Oct. 2, 1933, in Catawba County, he was the son of the late Clarence Cromer Deal and the late Pearl Amos Deal. He was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Elks and Moose lodges in Newton and the Civitan Club. He worked for Blue Ridge Distributors for 27 years and was owner/operator of Rays Grocery. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Glenn Deal; and two sisters, Ruth Bush and Margaret Waters. He is survived by his wife, Doris Ann Hefner Deal of the home; two daughters, Anita Ann Deal and Karen Parris and husband, Dewayne, of Newton; three brothers, Robert Deal of Newton, Carl Deal of Maiden and Bill Deal of Denver; two sisters, Catherine Turbyfill of Cranberry and Martha Bunton of Newton; six grandsons, Chris Speagle and wife, Kristy, James “Zach” Speagle, Keith Willis Jr. and wife, Jeannie, Shane Parris, Ethan Parris and Marcus Parris; two granddaughters, Danielle Parris and Kaitlyn Parris; and five stepgreat-grandchildren. The funeral service will be held Thursday, Aug. 11, 2005, at 1 p.m. at Concordia Lutheran Church in Conover, with the Rev. Donald Oldenburg officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in Catawba Memorial Park in Hickory. Pallbearers include Eddie Bush, John Bush, Brian Deal, Bill Frye, Scott Watts and Mike Watts. Honorary pallbearers include members of the 1952 class of Newton-Conover High School. The family will receive friends today, Wednesday, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Burke Mortuary in Newton. Memorials may be made to the Concordia Christian Day School Scholarship Fund, 215 Fifth Ave., SE, Conover, N.C. 28613. Burke Mortuary in Newton is serving the Deal family.
