Fred Long ARNDT⁹⁵², son of Carroll Edgar ARNDT and Augusta Elizabeth [Hilderbrand] HILDEBRAND, was born on 29 December 1927 in Catawba County, North Carolina.⁵⁸² He died on 19 March 2009 at the age of 81 in Maple Leaf Health Care, Statesville, North Carolina. He was buried in Mountain View Church Cemetery, Alexander Co., NC. His obituary appeared as follows: CATAWBA - Fred Long Arndt, 81, of Catawba, died Thursday, March 19, 2009, at Maple Leaf HealthCare Center in Statesville. Born Dec. 29, 1927, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late Carroll Edgar Arndt and Augusta Sherrill Hildebran. Mr. Arndt was a member of Mountain View United Methodist Church. He retired from General Electric as a dispatcher. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served his country in the Korean conflict as a gunner with a crew on an 81-mm gun. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert C. Arndt, Everett Arndt and William Arndt; three sisters, Ruth Arndt Gilleland, Edna Murray and Ethel A. Fisher; and two half sisters, Leona Sherrill Barkley and Beatrice Sherrill Sigmon. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Minnie Setzer Arndt of the home; two sons, Tony L. Arndt and wife, Mindy Ternent Arndt, of Mooresville and John T. "Tim" Arndt and wife, Dawn Rae Arndt, of Sherrills Ford; two grandsons, Eric Arndt and Alex Arndt; and sister, Nadine A. Bumgarner of Catawba. A service of remembrance will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 22, 2009, at Mountain View United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Richard "Rich" Irwin officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, with military honors conducted by members of American Legion Post 16. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m., prior to the service, at the church. Memorials may be made to Mountain View United Methodist Church, 1248 Balls Creek Road, Claremont, N.C. 28610.
