Rita Charlene "Charlie" MITCHELL was born on 21 February 1954 in Newton, Catawba County, North Carolina.¹⁹⁰¹ She died of lung cancer on 30 November 2005 at the age of 51 in Chesapeake, Virginia. Her obituary appeared as follows: CHESAPEAKE, Va. - Rita Charlene Maxwell, 51, “Charlie” as she was known to her friends, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2005. Despite being a nonsmoking health enthusiast, she was overcome by lung cancer. Born Feb. 21, 1954, in Newton, N.C., she was raised in Hickory, N.C., by her parents, Eva Mitchell Setzer and the late Charles Richard Mitchell. She graduated from St. Stephen High School and in 1976 received a B.A. degree from Western Carolina University. A Miss Congeniality beauty contestant, she also competed in many organized sports activities. Hired as a flight attendant by Piedmont Aviation in 1979, she moved to Tidewater, Va., and completed her 26-year career with US Airways. The consummate “Stu,” Charlie loved working for the airlines. She made friends easily and will be missed by many. Although she traveled all over the world, the sun and surf of the Outer Banks remained one of her favorite destinations. She is survived by her husband, Bill Maxwell; mother and stepfather, Eva and Jim Setzer; sisters, Lisa Mitchell and Cheryl Clark; a stepsister, Tressa Setzer Cline; a stepbrother, Bobby Setzer; brothers-in-law, Duane Clark and Cecil Cline; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a stepbrother, Scott E. Setzer; as well as her grandparents, Marshall and Carrie Mitchell and Ralph and Brinettie Goins. A memorial service and reception will be held at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments Chesapeake Chapel, 1416 Cedar Road, on Sunday, Dec. 4, 2005, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Race for Breath at www.raceforbreath.active.com.
