Richard Cline HERMAN and Avis Arabelle NEWMAN were married on 24 February 1946. Avis Arabelle NEWMAN¹⁵⁷⁸, daughter of John NEWMAN and Viola WREN, was born on 5 April 1913 in Blythe, Georgia. She died after a valiant eight-year struggle with dementia on 4 August 2004 at the age of 91 in Kent, King, Washington. She was buried in St. John's Lutheran Church (MO Synod) Cemetery, Conover, Catawba County, NC. Her obituary appeared as follows: CONOVER - Avis Arabelle Herman was born in Blythe, Ga., on April 5, 1913, and died Aug. 4, 2004, in Kent, Wash., after a valiant eight-year struggle with dementia. Avis spent most of her married life in Claremont before moving to New Jersey in 1996 to live with her daughter, Pat Liaw. In 1999 she moved to Kent to be near her youngest daughter, Sandra Dehmer. Avis was the daughter of Viola Wren and John Newman. She graduated from Blythe High School in 1931 and attended Augusta Junior College from 1931 to 1933. She earned a two-year degree in teaching. In 1937 she married Preston Carter, who died in 1938, days before their child, Preston Allen Carter, was born. She married Richard Cline Herman on Feb. 24, 1943, and after World War II they moved to Claremont, where they built their house on family farmland surrounded by trees and 25 acres. Avis was preceded in death by her husband, Richard; two sons, Allen Carter and Billy Herman; and one grandchild, Preston Allen Carter Jr. She is survived by her three daughters, Brenda Herman and husband, Roy Parkins, of West Linn, Ore., Pat Liaw and husband, Yee, of Warren, N.J., and Sandra Dehmer and husband, Paul, of Kent, Wash.; a daughter-in-law, Betty Carter of DeLand, Fla.; five grandchildren, Chrissy Dehmer of North Wales, Pa., Tom Dehmer of Dallas, Texas, Glenda Knight of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Deborah Petty of Phenix City, Ala., and Pam Phillips of Taylorsville; and four great-grandchildren, Ashlyn Knight, Hayley Petty, Travis Petty and Shannon Phillips. Avis was a homemaker for many years and an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Conover. She enjoyed her family and friends, traveling, gardening and all types of needlework. She will be greatly missed for her smiling personality, warm spirit and loving, generous heart. Funeral service and burial will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Conover. Viewing and family visitation will be from 1 to 2:45 p.m. Saturday at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Memorials are gratefully requested to the Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N.
