Ezra Odell LAFONE was born on 23 April 1915 in Catawba County, North Carolina. He died on 18 May 2007 at the age of 92 in Lutheran Home West, Hickory, North Carolina. He was buried in St. Stephen's Lutheran Church Cemetery, Hickory, NC. His obituary appeared as follows: HICKORY - Ezra Odell Lafone, 92, of Lutheran Home Hickory West, died Friday, May 18, 2007, after a period of declining health. He was born April 23, 1915, in Catawba County to the late Lawrence Odell and Carrie Killian Lafone. A lifelong member of St. Stephens Lutheran Church - Mo. Synod, he was employed in the hosiery industry and owned his own business. He was in the Navy and served on the USS Nevada. He was preceded in death by two wives, Nell Lafone Stafford and Elsie Herman Lafone; two sisters, Hazel Hallman and Sadie Sherrill; and two brothers, Buford and Glenn Lafone. Survivors include his daughter, Ruth L. Dietz; a son and daughter-in-law, Tony O. and Kay Lafone of Hickory; four granddaughters, Debbie Koski and husband, Rich, of Olney, Md., Sherree Mitchum and husband, Mark, of Mount Pleasant, S.C., Tiffani Bolick and husband, Andy, of Hickory, and Brandi McKinney and husband, Mike, of Greensboro; three great-grandsons, Justin Collins and wife, Jessica, of Olney, Md., Clay Koski of Olney, Md., and Matthew Mitchum of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; one great granddaughter, Mary Kay McKinney, of Greensboro; one great-great-granddaughter, Caylee Marie Collins of Olney, Md.; one sister, Josephine Whitener of Hickory; two brothers, Foy Lafone of Annandale, Va., and Fred Lafone and wife, Mildred, of Claremont; and three stepchildren, Kay Reed, Clifteen Price, Larry Herman and wife, Joan, and their families. The funeral service will be conducted by Pastors Dave Guelzow and David Ziehr at 2 p.m. Monday, May 21, 2007, at St. Stephens Lutheran Church - Mo. Synod. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Interment will be in St. Stephens Lutheran Church - Mo. Synod Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Andy Bolick, Justin Collins, Tommy Lafone, Charles Lee Sherrill, Benjamin Wheeler and the Rev. Phil Whitener. The family will receive friends Monday following the service at the church. Memorials may be made to Lutheran Home Hickory West, 1125 Tenth St. Blvd., NW, Hickory, N.C. 28601 or Palliative CareCenter & Hospice of Catawba Valley, 3975 Robinson Road, Newton, N.C. 28658.
