Ellen Lorena STEPHENS, daughter of Charles Marion STEPHENS and Minnie Lucretia [Settlemire] SETTLEMYRE, was born on 9 February 1917 in Burke County, North Carolina.2786 She died on 9 December 2008 at the age of 91 in Hickory, Catawba County, North Carolina. Her obituary appeared as follows: HICKORY - Ellen Lorena Stephens McCall, 91, of Hickory, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2008. Born in Burke County on Feb. 9, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Charles Stephens and Minnie Settlemyre Stephens. She was a graduate of King's Beauty School in Greensboro, Class of 1946. Ellen was a cosmetologist in the Hickory area for 50 years. She was a friend of all who crossed her path, especially the needy. An able person, she was an example of competency in the home, garden, at work and church. Ellen was a member of St. Andrews Lutheran Church in Hickory since 1952. She was a kind and gentle soul who always expressed gratitude for the care she received. This graciousness endeared her with all who knew Ellen in her last years. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Cline Hefner of Hickory; brothers, Sampson Stephens, Baine Stephens, Lloyd Stephens, William Taft Stephens and Alvin Stephens; and sisters, Mary Stephens, Blondell Stephens Jackson, Sally Martha Stephens Cahall, Gladys Stephens Kretchmer and Maude Lucretia Stephens. She is survived by her husband Wilburn B. McCall; three nephews; and three nieces. The funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008, in the chapel at Bass-Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Richard W. Fritz Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Catawba Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., at the funeral home. Bass-Smith Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the family of Ellen Lorena Stephens McCall.
