Martha Caroline HERMAN and Rufus [Ekard] ECKARD were married on 13 January 1859 in Catawba County, North Carolina.696 by Wm. L. Mehaffey, J.P. Rufus [Ekard] ECKARD, son of David ECKARD and Betsy Caroline WILLIAMS, was born on 17 April 1835 in Lincoln (Catawba County), North Carolina.62 He appeared in the census in 1860 in Flint Rock Twp., Catawba County, North Carolina. 818/798 Rufus Eckard age 25 M Blacksmith 200/560 b. Captured at Hanover Court House, Virginia, May 27, 1862." Confined at Fort Monroe, Virginia, and at Fort Columbus, New York Harbor. Exchanged on an unspecified date. Returned to duty prior to November 1, 1862. Killed at Fredericksburg, Virginia, December 13, 1862. [Records of the Federal Provost Marshal dated 1862 give his age as 27.] He died on 13 December 1862 at the age of 27 in Fredericksburg, VA in battle during the Civil War.414

Company C, 28th Regiment NC Troops-

"This company, known as the "South Fork Farmers" was raised in Catawba County and enlisted at Newton, NC. It was mustered into service on 13 August 1861 and assigned to the regiment of Company C. After joining the regiment the company functioned as a part of the regiment, and its history for the war period is reported as a part of the regimental history.

"The information containing in the following roster of the company was compiled principally from Company muster rolls for 13 August - December 1861; March 1862-April 1863; and September 1864-February 1865. No company muster rolls were found for January-February 1862; May 1863-August 1864; or for the period after February 1865. Valuable information was obtained also from primary records such as the Roll of Honor, medical records, prisoner of war records, discharge certificate, and pension applications, and from secondary sources as postwar roster and histories, cemetery records and records of the United Daughters of the Confederacy."

Eckard, Rufus. Sergeant. He resided in Catawba County, NC where he enlisted on 13 August 1861 and was mustered in as a corporal; then promoted to sergeant on 27 February 1862. He was captured at Hanover Court House, VA on 27 May 1862 and confined at Fort Monroe, VA and at Fort Columbus, New York Harbor. He was exchanged on an unspecified date and returned to duty prior to 1 November 1862. He was killed at Fredericksburg, VA on 13 December 1862. Alfred Monroe HEDRICK, son of Joseph [Hettrick] HEDRICK and Catharine "Cate" HEFNER, was born on 9 March 1841 in Catawba County, North Carolina.100,103,355,693,694,699 He was baptized on 24 April 1841 in St. Peter's Lutheran Church cemetery, north of Conover, Catawba County, NC.445 In 1860 he was an apprentice a blacksmith under Rufus Eckard in Flint Rock Twp., Catawba County, North Carolina.355 His record in the War Between the States is as follows:388 HEDRICK, ALFRED M., Sergeant, Company F, 38th Regiment N.C. Troops - Born in Catawba County* where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 20, October 31, 1861. Mustered in as Private. Promoted to Corporal on April 18, 1862. Promoted to Sergeant on April 6, 1863. Present or accounted for through October, 1864. Surrendered at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, April 9, 1865. Alfred died on 17 April 1927 at the age of 86 in Catawba County, North Carolina.695 He was buried in St. Peter's Lutheran Church cemetery, north of Conover, Catawba County, NC.
