Born March 16, 1921, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late Olen and Ella Huffman Bumgarner. A lifelong member of Millers Lutheran Church, he was former part owner of New-Con Electric, a veteran of World War II and a former avid square dancer with the Hickory Nut Squares. Survivors include his wife, Alice Poovey Bumgarner; two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael R. Bumgarner and wife, Sue B. Bumgarner of Taylorsville and Chris A. Bumgarner and wife, Lisa H. Bumgarner; two grandsons, Casey and Reed Bumgarner all of Conover; two sisters, Helen Moser and Kate Miller of Hickory; and a brother, Dale Bumgarner of Conover. The Celebration of Life Service will be conducted by the Revs. C. Person Shaw Jr. and John C. Moebius at 2 p.m. today, May 20, 2004, at Millers Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Catawba Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Casey Bumgarner, Reed Bumgarner, Gene Miller, Wayne Poovey, C.E. Moser and Chad Sigmon. The family will be at Millers Lutheran Church from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. today. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Millers Lutheran Church. Ray Albert BUMGARNER and Willa Alice "Willie" POOVEY were married estimated 1943. Willa Alice "Willie" POOVEY, daughter of Pinkney Eli POOVEY and Myrtle Marie HUNT, was born on 12 December 1920 in Catawba County, North Carolina.2849 She died on 27 October 2012 at the age of 91 in Lutheran Home West, Hickory, North Carolina. Her obituary appeared as follows: HICKORY - Mrs. Willie Alice Poovey Bumgarner, 91, passed away Saturday, October 27, 2012 at the Lutheran Home, West. She was born December 12, 1920 in Catawba County, the daughter of Pinkney and Myrtle Hunt Poovey. She was a member of Miller's Lutheran Church, where she had formerly taught Sunday school. She had worked at both St. Stephen's Elementary and St. Stephen's High School in the cafeteria and was a member of the Hickory Nut Square Dancers. A mild-mannered person with a great personality, she enjoyed bridge, cooking and square dancing. Devoted to her family, one of her great joys was being with them as much as possible. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ray "R.A." Albert Bumgarner; three sisters, Faye Breitzman, Rose Lynn and Jo Anne Smith; three brothers, Howard "Bud" Poovey, Paul Poovey, and Samuel Poovey and an infant sister. Survivors include her two sons, Michael Bumgarner and wife, Sue of Taylorsville and Chris Bumgarner and wife, Lisa of Conover; two sisters, Doris Whitener of Newton and Carol Crouch of Conover; two brothers, Roy Poovey of Troutman and Wayne Poovey of Hickory; two grandchildren, Casey Bumgarner and wife, Stacey of Shelby and Reed Bumgarner and wife, Amanda of Granite Falls and a great-grandchild Corbin Bumgarner of Shelby. A funeral service will be held at 2 PM Tuesday, October 30th at Miller's Lutheran Church (NALC) by Pastor Jason Sigmon. Burial will follow in Catawba Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:30 PM Tuesday before the service at the church.
