He died on 14 April 2005 at the age of 82 in Hickory, Catawba County, North Carolina. He was buried in Fairview (Houck's Chapel) Cemetery, Hickory, North Carolina. His obituary appeared as follows: HICKORY - George Adrian Atwood, 82, of Hickory, died April 14, 2005, at his residence. Born Sept. 23, 1922, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late Prace Arnold and Myrtle Wilson Atwood. A member of Penelope Baptist Church, he retired from Drexel Furniture (Southern Desk Co.) after 35 years. Mr. Atwood worked for Avis Rent A Car part time in rental and sales. He graduated from Hickory High School, attended Ripon College in Ripon, Wis., and was a graduate from Mars Hill College in Mars Hill. He retired from the U.S. Army, served in the 314th Medical Battalion in Europe during World War II and was a member of American Legion Post 48 and founder of the Foothills Antique Auto Club. Survivors include his wife, Ruby Elrod Atwood of the home; two daughters, Debbie A. Barger and fiancé, Dean Williams, and Shirley A. Rozzelle and husband, Ryan Rozzelle, of Hickory; and three grandsons, Michael Barger, Adam Pitts and Nicholas Rozzelle of Hickory. A graveside service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in Fairview Cemetery, with military graveside rites conducted by members of American Legion Post 48. The family will be at Bass-Smith Funeral Home and Crematory from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday. Bass-Smith Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the family of George Adrian Atwood.
