CONOVER - J. Herman Hunsucker, 83, of Conover, died Thursday, July 22, 2004, at Catawba Valley Medical Center. Born Sept. 7, 1920, in Amelia County, Va., he was the son of the late Junius Ray and Mary Young Hunsucker. He worked for 28 years in hosiery mills and he, along with his wife, had been the co-owners/operators of Conover Mobile Home Park for 23 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, where he received 3 Bronze Stars, Combat Infantryman Badge, Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart with one Oak Leaf Cluster, an American Theatre Ribbon, and was recently awarded from U.S. Congressman Cass Ballenger the Normandy Medal of The Jubilee of Liberty. He was a member of American Legion Post 16. He was a lifelong member of Concordia Lutheran and served as an usher for some years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Hassel Hunsucker. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Thelma Angle Hunsucker of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Brenda Hunsucker of Belmont and Dennis and Nita Hunsucker of Conover; six grandchildren, Wes Hunsucker and his wife, Tonya, Nikki Tommey and her husband, Dale, Benjy Hunsucker and his wife, Lauren, Chad Richard Hunsucker and his wife, Carol, Landon Ross Hunsucker and Robert “Trey” Lee Taylor III and his wife, Jessica; four great-grandchildren, Jacob Hunsucker, Cole Hunsucker, Abbie Toomey and Ceara Hunsucker; a brother, Ray Hunsucker of Hickory; a nephew, David Hunsucker of Hickory; and a special cousin, Robert Lamance of Elizabethtown, Ky. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 25, 2004, at Concordia Lutheran Church in Conover. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. The Rev. Donald Oldenburg will officiate and burial will follow in Conover City Cemetery. American Legion Post 16 will perform graveside rites. Pallbearers will be Roger Hunsucker, Robert Lamance, Wes Hunsucker, Dale Tommey, Benjy Hunsucker, Chad Hunsucker, Landon Hunsucker and Trey Taylor. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 24, at Drum Funeral Home in Conover.
