Doug "Doug" SMITH, son of Bryson Medford SMITH and Ellen Elizabeth HOYLE, was born on 6 January 1928 in Jackson County, North Carolina. He died on 2 December 2003 at the age of 75 in Catawba Valley Medical Center, Hickory, Catawba County, North Carolina. He was buried in Conover City Cemetery, Conover, Catawba, North Carolina. His obituary appeared as follows: SIMS, Alice Mozelle NEWTON - Alice Mozelle Sims Marlowe, formerly of Newton, died Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2006, at N.C. Lutheran Home in Hickory. Born in Caldwell County, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Thomas Sims and Ollie Benfield Sims. She was a lifelong Baptist and a member of Tri-City Baptist Church in Conover, where she was a member of the Rubies Sunday school class. She enjoyed traveling and coordinating excursions to the Holy Land, writing and taking classes at Catawba Valley Community College. A 1956 graduate of Clevenger College, she was in the Alpha Iota Sorority. She was one of the first female officers with the Newton Police Department and a homemaker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Pinkney Marlowe. Survivors include a daughter, Patsy Rosenstein and her friend, Charles Abernethy, of Newton; a son, Bobby “Bob” Marlowe and his wife, Gaye S. Marlowe, of Claremont; a sister, Doris Barnes of Newton; and three grandchildren, Michael A. Newton of Los Angeles, Calif., Alison Marlo Newton of Philadelphia, Pa., and Justin Marlowe of Chapel Hill. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3:30 p.m. today, Thursday, Jan. 5, 2006, at Jenkins Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held in Eastview Cemetery in Newton immediately following the visitation. Pastors Byron Repass and Paul Birner will officiate.
