At the outset of the emergency period, North Carolinians of course began to help swell the ranks of the nation's armed forces. The National Guard was mobilized, Selective Service instituted and enlistments opened to those having preference for a particular branch of service. When the shooting was over, according to figures of the War and Navy Departments, 372,325 men and women from this state had served as of July 31, 1946.
