According to Johnson Co., Ill. Heritage Book, all the children by 1st wife was
given the surname of Travelstreet. Merged General Source: Lincoln Co. Marriage
Records 1783-1866 Females by Frances T. Ingmire.
The Following was printed in the 1994 December Issue of The Family Reporter and
was taken from the Title, "The Illinois Travelstead/Street Genesis"
extracted from Johnson Co. Illinois Heritage Book:
The Travelstead/Street family in America began when Christian Traffenstätt left
his home in the Rhine Valley in Germany and journeyed up the Rhine River to Rotterdam
in the Netherlands. There he boarded the ship Two Brothers and set sail for the
United States. After a stopover in Wales, the ship landed at Philadelphia, PA
on Sep. 23, 1753.
Sometime after arriving in America, Christian married Maria Barbara Eckard. Christian
and Maria remained in Pennsylvania until at least Oct. 9, 1765. During this time
period, he sired two sons named Peter and Frederick, four daughters named Catherine,
Elizabeth, Barbara and Sarah and a fifth daughter whose name has not been determined.
Sometime between Oct. 9, 1765 and July 14, 1767, Christian moved his family to
Lincoln Co., NC. There he sired three additional sons named John, William and
Christian (Jr.). Christian accumulated additional land prior to his death in
September 1774. The bulk of his estate was left to his wife, Maria, who accumulated
additional land prior to her death in September 1793.
Maria’s will named all five of her sons plus five sons-in-law; Peter Deal,
John Cline, Martin Eckard, Christopher Collumbus and Godfrey Bolick. The bulk
of the estate, however, was left to William. William was also charged with the
responsibility of taking care of his younger brother, Christian.
On Dec. 8, 1793, William, who was now using the surname of Travelstreet, paid
his brother-in-law, Peter Deal, 250 pounds and married Katrine Antoni, A.K.A.
Catherine Anthony. Apparently Kathrine was Peter Deal’s indentured servant.
William’s brother, Peter, who was now using the surname of Traffenstadt,
married a full blooded Indian known only as Mahala (this is the line from which
our Traffanstedt line descended) and sired seven children: Daniel, Peter, Jr.,
Sally, Catherine, Susanna, Mary and Betsy. Peter spent the remainder of his life
in North Carolina and died in 1842. His line underwent several name changes with
the majority of them finally using the name Travis. (Notice that the Heritage
book only lists the first 7 of Peter & Mahalia’s 10 children. Our Joseph
is not listed as well as William and Polly).
The Catawba County Heritage Book states that Frederick remained in North Carolina
and raised his family. Other records, however, confirm that he died in Carter
Co., TN, in November 1814.
William and John left North Carolina sometime prior to 1804 and moved into Tennessee
and Kentucky. It appears that they moved around between Sumner Co., TN, and Allen
and Warren Counties in Kentucky.
William and Catherine Travelstreet had seven children. Six of these children
were named Elizabeth, Sally, John Solomon, William W., Anthony F., and Abraham
H. The other child, a male has not been identified at this time. Apparently,
all of these children were given the surname of Travelstead. Catherine died in
1811, the year that Abraham was born. (we have the above unlisted son above listed
as Benjamine).
On December 10 of that year, William Travelstreet took a second bride, Hannah
Miers, and began to raise a second family. William and Hannah had 13 children.
Eleven of these children are believed to have been named Samuel, Rebecca, Nancy
M., Andrew K., Polly, Martha J., Peter William, Daniel W., Calvin J., G. Wesley
and Benjamin. Two additional daughters have not been identified at this time.
John Solomon Travelstead married Nancy Pinkham and they had eight children before
they left Kentucky. Seven of these children were named Rachel, Peggy, George,
Jefferson Alexander, Melvina I., Lisannah and Polly. The other daughter has not
yet been identified.
William W. Travelstead married Cynthia Ann Harrison. Only one child, Anthony
A., is known of this union.
In 1842, John Solomon and William W. left Kentucky for Texas. They crossed the
Ohio River at Shawneetown, IL, on an old ferry boat and proceeded into the Illinois
wilderness. They (unreadable) their oxen to what is now Crab Orchard where they
camped for a few days. While at this camp a storm arose followed by a heavy rain.
Texas was quickly forgotten and the colony headed back to what is now Harrisburg,
IL.
On Dec. 10, 1842, John Solomon and Nancy had their ninth child, John Solomon,
Jr. Their tenth child, Nancy, was not born until 1848. John Solomon, Jr., subsequently
changed his surname to Street and moved back to Tennessee Two ? ? William and
Hannah Travelstead, Samuel and ? William, also came to Illinois in the mid-1800’s
? it has not been confirmed, it can be ? that they accompanied John Solomon and
William W. on the journey in 1842.
John Solomon, William W., Samuel and Peter Travelstead appear to be the founders
of the Illinois Travelstead.s. John Solomon’s son, Jefferson Alexander, is
the founder of the Southern Illinois Street families. --Submitted
