BASTARDY BONDS FROM CHATHAM CO., N.C.

Pg. 43, Feb., 1775
ANN WHITE, a base born child about two years and a half, old
be bound to HENRY BRAY, Sr. and MARY, his wife, during their life (that
is to say) untill she shall arrive to lawfull age to learn the business
of Housewifery.

JOHN DICKSON be fined four pounds proc. (proclaimed money) for charges
in laying in, etc. and five pounds a year for five years for the maintainance
of a base born child begot by him of the body of RACHAEL HAYWORTH. and
that he enter into bond with security.

FREDERICK COBB, father of two children begot on the body of WINEFRED
BRASWELL, pay to HENRY BRASWELL, three pounds proc. for expenses expended
in the said WINEFRED laying in.

in of the said CESSELA PRINCE, the further sum of five pounds .........(unreadable)

JAMES PARHAM, pay unto ANN YARBOROUGH, 3 pounds for the expenses of
her laying in also 5 pounds per annum for the term of Seven years having
entered into bond with CHARLES HARRINGTON, for the performance of the same.

BALAAM THOMPSON, Esqr. pay unto ELIZABETH WALCH, five pounds for the
laying in month, and five pounds for the first year that is past, making
10 pounds, which is to be paid down immediately. And the said BALAAM THOMPSON
do pay to the said ELIZABETH, five pounds yearly for two years commencing
from the 20th of April last, such payments to be made on the 20th day of
April in each year. Provided the child should die, the payment to cease
form that period.

be bound to Docter FRANCIS FARRELL and wife untill she comes of lawfull
age, she being _______(blank) years , now to learn the business of house
wifery.

JAMES LANGSTON, pay to FRANCIS HILL 7 pounds for the laying year to
be pound emideiatly & yearly for the term of 6 years to commence the
8th day of February next & so yearly untill the whole sum is paid in
case the child lives.

PG. 108 - Aug., 1791
On motion of JOHN WILLIAMS, Esqr., att. for FRANCIS HILL and hearing
JAMES LANGSTON, Jr. taking ? the maintenance of a baise born child begotten
by him on the body of FRANCIS HILL. Said JAMES LANGSTON do pay to FRANCIS
HILL 7 pounds immediately in t he years maintainances of the said child
and for her laying in such year to commence from the 8th day of February,
1792 and the said JAMES further pay to the said FRANCIS , the yearly sum
of 5 pounds for 6 years if the child so long liveth and if it should die
within any of the said 6 years, then a proper part of such sum to be paid
by the said JAMES to the said FRANCIS.

Pg. 319 - Feb. 1794
Ordered that JOHN M. LEVINE pay unto MARY MOODY, forty shillings for
the lyimg in month and five pounds a year for five years the Seven pound
to be paid immediately and the rest annually as they become due.
Pg. 43(top) Nov., 1794
Ordered that WILLIAM MOODY pay TABITHA WEBSTER. six pounds per year
for four years, past and forty shillings for the lying in month.
Pg. 86 (top) - May, 1795
Ordered that JOHN EVANS, pay unto NANCY RIGHT (WRIGHT?) forty shillings
for the laying in month and five pounds for each and every year for
five years to be paid annually, if the child should so long live, the forty
shillings, and two pounds ten shillings for the half to the first year
to be paid immediately the other half of the first year being fifty shillings
more to be paid on the 6th day of October next and the subsequent payments
to be made annually on the 6th day of October in every year until the whole
be paid.

Ordered that JOAB JOHNSTON, pay unto SARAH QUEEN forty shillings down
and five pounds the first day of Sept. next and five pounds annually for
four years after, in the support and maintainance of the child begot on
her by the said JOHNSTON, forty shillings pain into court & paid by
J. R.(?) to the woman.

Ordered that ZEBULON DITTO pay unto JEMIMA WARD, forty shillings down
and five pounds the first day of Sept. next and five pounds annually for
four years after for the support and maintainance of the child begot on
her body by the said DITTO.

Ordered that JAMES MEACHAM, be sited to appear next Court & shew
cause why an order should not be made fo the support & maintainance
of two Bastard children begot on the body of PEGGY COPLAND, this order
discharged in subsequent order, tomorrow.

In the matter of JAMES MECHAM for Bastardy - On motion of Mr.
Burton, council for JAMES MECHAM, praying that this matter might stand
over till the next Court it appearing that the said JAMES appeared at the
last Court ot answer a charge of Bastardy and gave the usual Bond and Sur'y
(surety). and that PEGGY COPLAND, the mother of the children was about
to move? the Court for an order for their maintenance & that the said
James had notice thereof and being present in Court desired by his council
that such applycation might be made till the present term and the same
being consented to by the said Peggy & the said Peggy at this term
accordingly appearing and moving the Court for the said Order, this Court
doth Order that (upon notice hereof to be given to the said James or left
at his last or most usual place of abode) an do appear at the next Court
& shew cause if any he hath why the said order should not be made.

Ordered that JAMES MITCHAM pay unto PEGGY COPLAND, the mother of a
Bastard Child named BETSEY, about three years old begotten on her Body
by the said James, Seven pounds at the present May Session and fifteen
pounds at May Session 1797 and five pounds more at May Session '98 for
the maintainance of the said Betsey.
Ordered that JAMES MITCHAM pay to PEGGY COPLAND Seven pounds on the 12th November next and five pounds on the 12th Novem. '97 & five pounds on the 12th Novem. '98 and five pounds on the 12th Nov. 1799 & five pounds on the 12th day of Novem'r, 1800 being for the maintainance of a Bastard Child named ANNY, about Eighteen months old begotten by the said James on the Body of the sd Peggy.

Ordered that, ANDREW WHITE, pay unto REBECCA ROWLAND, mother of a bastard
Child named SARAH, about Eighteen months old, begotten on her body by the
sd Andrew, fifty shillings, down and fifty shillings at the end of twelve
months from this day, and the further sum of five pounds annually for the
further time of two years & nine months.

Ordered that ELNATHAN DAVIS, Jr. pay unto ELIZABETH BURCHETT, three
pounds to be paid down and five pounds for five years successively to be
paid annually for the support and maintainance of a Bastard Child begotten
on the body of the sd. Elizabeth by the said Davis.

Ordered that ISAAC BROOKS, pay unto MARY BROWN, forty shillings down
and five pounds a year untill the child arrives at the age of five years
- begot on the body of the said MARY BROWN, by the said ISAAC BROOKS.

Ordered that ISAAC(?) BROOKS Jr. pay unto MARY BROWN, forty shillings
down for her laying in month, & five pounds seven months from this
term and five pounds annually afterwards for the term of four years - for
the maintenance of a Base born child begotten on the body of saId Mary
by the said ISAAC BROOKS.

Ordered that, WILLIAM MOODY, the younger, appear at the Court &
shew cause why an allowance for the maintainance of JOHN, upwards of two
years old a base born child, begotten by him on the body of TABITHA WEBSTER,
should not be made & why he should not give bond to indemnify the parish
in that respect.

Ordered that EPHRAIM LEDBETTER, a base born child of WINEFORD LEDBETTER,
be bound unto JAMES COPELAND, untill he arrives at lawfull age he being
about Nine years now.
Pg. 168 - Nov., 1797
Ordered that WILLIAM WILLIT, pay down to MARY FIELDS for the
laying in month. Forty shillings as usual & three pounds now, making
four pounds - & the usual payment instalments that is to say Seven
pounds for the first year & five pounds, annually for three years afterwards,
the first year payable 12 months hence, for the maintenance of a bastard
child begott by the sd. William on the body of said MARY FIELDS.

Ordered that WILLIAM MOODY, pay down unto TABATHA WEBSTER, ten pounds
for the laying in month & four pounds next February and five pounds
a year for two years afterwards for the maintenance of a bastard child
begott by the said Wm. on the body of said TABITHA.
(This would be the boy JOHN, age two, named above)
Pg. 171 - Nov, 1797
Ordered that MOSES ATWATTER, pay to ELIZABETH WILLIS, fort shillings,
down for the laying in month & five pounds yearly for five years annually
for the maintainance of a bastard begott on the body of the said Elizabeth
by the said Moses. The said Moses hath given bond to indemnify the county.

BAZIL MANLY comes into court & enters into Bond with JAMES TAYLOR,
his security in the sum of Fifty pounds to keep a base born child of BETSEY
MALSBRYS? (MALEBRY?), from being chargeable to the County.

Ordered that WILLIAM WILLIT, pay to MARY FEILDS the usual allowance
for the maintainance of a bastard child begot on the Body of the sd. Mary.
Pg. 191 - May, 1798
Ordered that WILLIAM WILLIT be served with a rule to shew cause if
any, he have, why an attachment should not issue against him, at the Instance
of MARY FEILDS for not paying her the money due her for the maintainance
of a Bastard child, during three years last past, according to an order
of this court, heretofore made in the premises.

Ordered that ASA WILLIS, an illegitimate child be bound unto WILLIAM
WILLIS, till he arrive to a lawful age, he being now two years old, to
learn the farming business.
There aren't any bastardy bonds for the year 1800.
