Included in these papers are the rules of membership
in the church. Some of them pretty strict, by today's standards. I won't
take up the space that rootsweb provides by writing all of these in here.
Especially since there is no genealogical information.
But, if anyone has a question about what is or is not permitted, please
contact me and I will give you the particulars.
In the colonial period it was against the law
NOT to attend church and a person could be thrown in jail, fined or otherwise
punished for failing to attend.
Although things were much more lenient in the
mid 1800's it was still a bad person, who did not attend church.
Please understand too, that religion in these
times was very controlled and controlling. Neighbor could and did report
neighbors for things such as cursing, drinking & working on a
Sunday.! Sometimes envy or jealousy was behind these public accusations.
But, the people gave the church the power to censure, punish and excommunicate
them from 'fellowship'. Things that we would not think a thing about
doing (such as playing cards or sitting idle) was a sin. And this was not
a Quaker church! All churches were this way.
If you see your ancestors name in this, as being
expelled from the church, just remember, he probably didn't do anything
as bad as you have done in all innocence...
The spelling and grammar is, as in, the original,
unless I think it is too hard to understand - Thanks, Sue

JAMES FREEMAN and TERRELL BROOKS are app. delegates to the Assoc. I (being
ELKINS) made the statement that a horse swap took place between PETER B.
SMITH & CALIF (CALEB?) BEAL, the sd BEAL got me to ride the horse to
Rives Chapel and sd SMITH had a horse there and they swapped horses on
sunday at meeting as far as any bargain that ever was made between them
I think there was nothing binding on either of them prior to that time
concerning the swap. The sd SMITH told sd BEAL if he liked his horse better
than his own, to go and hitch this and take his'en away and I rode the
SMITH horse part of the way to sd BEALS, this being a true statement of
the above as far as I can recollect at present, this 9th Mar. 1836.
Register ELKINS.
Report continued- By the request of JOHN BURK, BROOKS BRANTLEY, &
JAMES FREEMAN, they wish me to state the conversation that took place between
myself and CALEB BEAL concerning a horse swap between him and PETER P.
SMITH. CALEB told me that he and SMITH swapped horses on Sun. I was at
work at the sd BEALS the before---? and returned on Monday, sd BEAL told
me that sd SMITH came by his house sometime previous to the time stopped
and BEAL said that he had a very sorry horse and SMITH told him to bring
him to Tick Creek on Sun and he would swap for him. I cautioned said BEAL
at the time for swapping horses on the Sabbath and his reply was that he
done two good things at the same time. going to meeting and swapping horses
at the same time. this is a true statement as far as I recollect at this
time. Mar. 9th, 1836 - Signed JOSEPH HACKNEY

T. Brooks and the church Beg to say that in our opinion Bro. T. Brooks
in the way he seemed to view the action of the church might have been in
some degree justifiable but on the whole he was indiscreet in his absence.
The action of the Church in appointing the delegates to the assoc.
by ballot after the appointment by the moderator according to their written
rules and thereby wounded Bro. Brooks feelings in that, in our opinion
the church was not right. In the case of the charge against the Church
of violating his temperance law in the reception of Bro. John Dark
from all that we could learn the church committed no violation according
to the construction fo that law by the church, at the time we therefore
hope:
Dear Brethern , that suitable acknowledgements will be made by all,
Dismiss the difficulty and walk together and love as children of our Blessed
Lord all of which we submit to you to consider action, William White,

opinion of the Brother and as to the propriety of a Christian, loving money
and more than legal interest shading notes and whereas as a full and loving
brothers we believe it to be our duty to answer him in the fear and according
to Will of God, therefore --
First. Resolved, that in the opinion of the Church no Christian man
ought not loan money at more than legal interest, our reasons for this
opinion are that the Bible throughout its whole extent condemns usury and
enjoins upon all obedience to the powers that be. Our laws are imperfect
on this subject, we as a free people bought to demand their amendments.
Second. Resolved, that we think it incumbent with the principles
of Christianity for a Church member to buy notes for gain, or in other
words to make a business or a habit of it. We are of the opinion
that they framed may frequently accommodate his favor by taking his notes
and a reasonable discount and in such cases it seems free from blame, but
when it becomes habitual and is sought after as a means of gain it tends
to excite and cultivate covetousness and oppression.
