WELCH NECK BAPTIST CHURCH RECORDS
Society Hill, S.C.
(POSSIBLE EMIGRANTS INTO CHATHAM CO, NC FROM WHAT WAS AN AREA OF DELAWARE
[NOW PA]
VIA SOUTH CAROLINA)
WPA Project 165-33-7172, sponsored by Univ. S. Caroline
Part I - 1737-1854 - Supervised by Miss Flora B. Surles,
originally copied by Addie S. Vance, Columbia, SC, 1937
ORIGIN OF THE CHURCH:
1737 - In the year 1737 a party of imigrants form the Welch Tract in
the State of Delaware removed to Pee Dee River, South Carolina which place
they designated the Welch-Neck, in remembrance of their former residence.
The following are the names of the individuals who composed this party
which was embodied into a church ---
Philip JAMES and his wife
Abel JAMES and his wife
Daniel JAMES and his wife
Daniel DEVONALD and his wife
Thomas EVANS and his wife
Thomas EVANS Jr. and his wife
John JONES and his wife
Thomas HARRY and his wife
David HARRY and his wife
John HARRY and his wife
Samuel WILDS and his wife
Samuel EVANS and his wife
Griffith JONES and his wife
David JONES and his wife
Thomas JONES and his wife
In January 1738, the above named persons were constituted a church under the style and title of the "Baptist Church of Christ at the Welch-Neck"- The following pages will disclose so much of the proceedings of said church as have escaped the ravages of time. It is a subject of regret that so much valuable information has been lost, but as the dificiency can be supplied by no human efforts the remainder should be treasured with the more care.
Philip JAMES son of James JAMES, Esq. was the first Pastor of this church.
He was ordained 1743, and died 1753.
Rev's John BROWN succeeded Mr JAMES, but continued for a short time
when Re'd Joshua EDWARDS was called to the pastoral office. He had the
care of the church six years. Mr. EDWARDS was succeeded by the Rev'd Robert
WILLIAMS - with this hwe have some account of the transactions of the church.
The records previously have been lost.
{the following page was a letter of instruction and a note that in the interest of economy both sides of the paper were used and single spaced form was adopted for all work on Statewide Historical Projects etc... How archaic that a government entitity would economize and what shock if it were to happen today!! }

As Mr. WILLIAMS could not give proper attendance to his office, the Church unanimously presented a call to the Rev'd Mr. Nicholas BEDGEGOOD of Charleston to minister to them in the word and Ordinances of the Gospel, for the term of one year, which call he accepted.
April 5 - Samuel REREDON formerly suspended for obsecene conversation,
applied to be restored to his former privileges; but not giving satisfaction
his suspension was continued.
The Rev'd Mr. John BROWN & Sarh his wife were dismissed to Cashaway
Chruch by letter requested.
July 1st - William JAMES was baptised, and received into full communion.
Jacob D'Surrency was suspended, for breach of Chruch Covenant in absenting
himself from public worship.
Walton (same as Walter, above?) DOWNES was supended, having behaved
in a very disorderly manner - He was foudn guilty of not filling his place
in the church spending his time in idleness, drinking to excess and acting
in contempt fo the church's authority. The church also sent him a letter
of admonition.
Aug. 9 - David HARRY Sr. died.
The above contains an account of the members added to the curch, from
the death of the Rev'd Nicholas Bedgegood, to the settlement of his successor,
the Rev'd Elhanan (Elnathan?) Winchester.
What follows doubtless conatins the list of those who were previously
members and those afterward added.
