This indenture made the ninth day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand seven
hundred and sixty two between the Right Honourable John Earl Granville, Viscount Carteret,
and Baron Carteret, of Hawnes in the County of Bedford, in the Kingdom of Great-Britain,
Lord President of His Majesty's Most Honourable Privy Council, and Knight of the Most Noble
Order of the Garter, of the one part; and William Barber of Orange County in the
Province of North Carolina, Planter of the other part.......now this indenture witnesseth,
That as well for and in consideration of the sum of Ten Shillings Sterling Money to the said
John Earl Granville in Hand paid by the said William Barber at or before the sealing and
delivery of these presents, the Recceipt whereof he the said Earl doth hereby acknowledge;
as also for and in consideration of the Rent, Covenants, Exceptions, Provisos and Agreements
herein after-mentioned, reserved and contained, and by, and on the Part and Behalf of the said
William Barber, his Heirs and Assigns, to be paid, kept, and performed; He, the said Earl,
hath given, granted, bargained, sold and confirmed, and by these presents, DOTH give, grant,
bargain, sell and confirm, unto the said William Barber, his Heirs and Assigns, for ever,
all that Tract or Parcel of Vacant land situate, lying and being in the parish ( parish not named )
in the County of Orange in the said Province On Indian Creek of Deep River
Beginning at a Hickory on Nathaniel Powell's line and runs thence with his
line North crossing the creek 75 Chain is a Pine then West 50 Chain
crossing a Fork of the Creek is a White Oak then South crossing a Fork 75
Chain to a White Oak on the said Powell's line then his line 50 Chain to the
First Station, Three Hundred Seventy Five Acres of Land ( 1 ).

There is a surveyor's report which shows a map of the above named land. It contains the same
written description and a map showing the land approximately centered on a point where 2 braanches of Indian Creek join to form one creek. The land was surveyed the 10th day of May
1762.

20 April 1763
The same Earl Granville, in a document similar to that of 1762, conveys six hundred and
fifteen acres of land to William Barber of Orange County in the Province of
North Carolina, Planter. The land description is On Indian Creek of Deep River
Beginning at a Hicory on his own line thence with his line east 10 Chain to a
Hicory thence North 65 Chain crossing the Creek to a Pine thence West 60
Chain crossing the Creek to a Pine thence South 110 Chain to a Pine
crossing the other Fork of the Creek thence East 50 Chain to a Stake on his
own line thence with his line North 45 Chain to the First Station ( 1 ).

A Surveyor's report dated 20 May 1763 contains the above land description and shows a
map of the land of the land with Indian Creek running through it. The map is not consistent
with the written description, but it does show that the survey was made for William Barber
and that the amount of land was 615 acres and that it was on Indian Creek.

RICHARD BARBER and WILLIAM BARBER are members of a jury to lay out and turn a road from where JACOB JUDGE turned out of the Quaker's Road to run across Bear Creek to below GEORGE HENDRY'S  field along a ridge in a straight course to the ford on Deep River. WILLIAM BARBER, JUNIOR is also a member of the jury, as are others.

To all to whom these presents shall come greeting. Know ye that for and in consideration of the
sum of 50 fifty shillings for every hundred acres hereby granted paid into our treasury by
Richard Barber have given and granted him bythese presents do give and grant unto the said
Richard Barber a Tract of land containing one hundred and thirty nine acres lying and being
in our County of Chatham on the South side of the Watering Prong of Indian Creek. Beginning
at the West line of William Barbey's ( Barber ? ) at a pine and running north twenty poles
to an Ash on the said creek at a Dividing Line between Him and ( G. Ellot ? ) then North
eighty degrees West fifty five poles to a Stake then North thirty two degrees West sixty four
poles to a ( ? ) Oak at a corner of Jeremiah Melton's then along his line West one hundred and twenty four poles to a Pine at Melton's corner then South twenty four poles to a Hickory at
Melton's other corner then West one hundred poles to a Red Oak in Melton's line then South
ninety two poles to a Dogwood on the South side of said Creek then east across said Creek
one hundred and fifty one poles to a Pine on Barber's line then North up the same ( Do the
words " the same " refer to Barber's line ) forty seven poles to a Stake then East one hundred
and ninety poles to the first station as by the plat hereunto annexed doth appear with all Woods,
Waters, Mines, Minerals, Hereditaments and Appurtenances to the said land belonging or
appertaining to the said Richard Barber his heirs and assigns forever yielding and paying to
us such sums of money yearly as Our General Assembly may from time to time direct.
PROVIDED ALWAYS that the said Richard Barber shall cause this grant to be registered
in the Register's Office of our said County of Chatham within twelve months from the date
hereof. Otherwise the same shall be void and of no effect.

In testimony whereof we have caused our grest seal to be hereunto affixed Witness Richard
Caswell, Esquire, Our Governor, Captain General and Commander in Chief
at Kingston the third day of March in the third year of our Independence and in the year of Our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and Seventy Nine.

cause this grant to be registered in the Register's Office of our said County of Chatham within

To all to whom these presents shall come greeting. Know Ye that we for and in consideration
of the sum of fifty shillings for every hundred acres granted paid into our treasury by William
Barber a tract of land containing six hundred and thirty nine acres lying and being in our County
of Chatham on Indian Creek on Indian Creek the Waters of Deep River on the North side of
said Deep River. Beginning at astump in his old line and running North across said Indian Creek
two hundred and fifty poles to a Pine then West across said Creek two hundred and eighty poles
to a Stake then South three hundred and eighty four and a half poles to a Red Oak then East
two hundred and forty poles to a Stake in his old Deeded Line then North along said line one
hundred and forty four and a half poles to a Hickory then East forty poles to the First Station.

The remainder of this document contains the standard terminology used in the above two
documents.

This indenture made this      day of       in the year of Our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred
and Eighty Between Joseph Edmondson of Chatham County in the Province of North
Carolina of the one part and William Barber of the County and Province aforesaid of the
other part. Witnesseth that the said Joseph Edmondson for and in consideration of the
sum of sixty pounds lawful money of the province aforesaid to him in hand paid by the said
William Barber before the ensigning and delivery of these presents, the receipt of which he
doth hereby acknowledgeand thereof and of every part and parcel of the same doth clearly
acquit and discharge the said William Barber his Executors and Administrators and every
of them by these presents hath granted aliened, released, enfeofed and confirmed and by these
presents for the consideration above mentioned doth grant, alien, release and perpetually
confirm to the said William Barber his Heirs and Assigns forever all that the said Joseph
Edmondson his parcel or Tract of land lying on the North Prong of the Indian Creek on the
South side of the said Creek on William Dunking's line in foresaid County and Province
is bounded as follows, to wit: Beginning at a Pine and running down said Creek the various
courses to a Gum then North too hundred and fore poles to a Spanish Oak in Duncan's
line then along his line ninety nine poles to the first Station. Including sixty three acres of land
be the same more or less which sixty three acres of land above bounded together with
reversion and reversions, remainder and remainders with all and singular the appurtenances
thereunto belonging or in anywise appertaining. To have and to hold the said lands and premises
and further the said Joseph Edmondson doth covenant and agree to warrant and defend
the Title of the above mentioned premises hereby made from all manner of person or persons
claiming the same and to make and execute further Deed or Deeds for the further Surety or
Sure Making the above premises if required by the said William Barber or his heirs. In
witness whereof the above said Joseph Edmondson hath hereunto interchangeably set
his hand and seal the day and year first above written.

This Indenture made this eighth day of May in the uear of Our Lord 1780 and in the fourth
year of the Independence of the State of North Carolina between William Barber of the
County of Chatham on the one part and Richard Barber of the same County and State of
the other part Witnesseth that the said William Barber for divers good Causes and
Considerations him hereunto moving but more especially for and in consideration of the sum of
five hundred pounds current money of this State to him in hand paid before the sealing and
delivery hereof, the receipt whereof he doth hereby acknowledge and himself herewith to be
fully satisfied and content and thereof and therefrom doth hereby acquit the aforesaid
Richard Barber his heirs, executors, administrators and assigns hath bargained, sold,
enfeoffed, conveyed and confirmed and by these presents for himself, his heirs and administrators
hath and doth fully, freely and absolutely bargain, sell, enfeoff and forever confirm unto the said
Richard Barber one certain Tract or Parcel of Land containing by estimate one hundred acres
be the same more or less lying and being on the Indian Creek Beginning on the Creek at a Post
Oak running to the said William Barber's west line then along said line to his West corner
then South to the Creek then down the Creek to the first station.......

The above Deed duly proved in open court by the oath of Joseph Robson and ordered
to be registered.

This Indenture made this eighth day of may in the year of Our Lord 1780 and in the fourth
year of the Independence of the State of North Carolina between William Barber of the
County of Chatham on the one part and Moses Barber of the said County and State on the
other part Witnesseth that the said William Barber for divers good causes and considerations
him hereunto moving but more especially for and in consideration of the sum of five hundred
pounds current money of this State to him in hand paid.......doth fully , freely, and absolutely
bargain,sell, convey, enfeoff and forever confirm unto the said Moses Barber one certain
Tract or Parcel of land containing by estimation one hundred and fifty acres be the same more
or less lying and being on the Indian Creek Beginning at a Red Oak on the said William
Barber's line, running along the said line to his North corner thence along the West line to the Creek then along a marked ( a marked what ? a word was left out ) to the Watering Prong
then up the Watering Prong to a Pine then to a Pine on the said William Barber's South
line then down a line of marked trees to the Spring Branch to a Plumb tree and thence to the
first Station.

containing three hundred and twenty acres lying and being in our County of Chatham.
Beginning at a marked Pine and ( running ? ) South three hundred and twenty poles to a Post
Oak then East one hundred and twenty poles to a Pine in an old line ( an old Barber line ? ).
Then up the same ( line ? ) North eighty four poles to a Stake at Milton's corner then East
along his line forty six poles to a maple then North two hundred and thirty six poles to a Post
Oak then West one hundred and seventy two poles to the first Station as by the plat hereunto
annexed doth appear, together with all woods, Waters, Mines, Minerals........

In Testimony whereof we have caused our Great Seal to be hereunto affixed Witness
Alexander Martin, Esquire, Our Governor, Captain General and Commander
in Chief at Fairfield, the twenty third day of October in the seventh year of our
Independence and in the year of Our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and Eighty Two.

forever a certain tract of land Situate, Lying and Being in the County aforesaid, being part
of a tract of land granted to the said William Barber under the hand of
Richard Caswell, Esquire, Governor and the Great Seal of the State of North
Carolina by Patent No. 112 bearing date the first day of July in the year one
thousand seven hundred and seventy nine registered in the Register's Office
of Chatham County, Book B, Page 260.

Beginning at a stake in the ( uper ? ) East and West line running thence South fifty six poles  to
a Post Oak thence East one hundred and eighty poles to a Pine in the lower North and South
line thence along said line North fifty six poles to a Pine at the corner of said Survey thence
West one hundred and eighty poles to the first Station containing sixty three acres be the same
more or less.

This Indenture made this 22 day of September in the year of Our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eighty three between William Barber, Senior of Chatham County and State of North Carolina of the one part and Jeremiah Melton of the County and State aforesaid of the other part Witnesseth that the said William Barber, Senior for and in consideration of the sum of two hundred pounds specie to him in hand paid by the said Jeremiah Melton.........doth grant, bargain, sell.....unto the said Jeremiah Melton.......a certain tract situate, lying and being in the County aforesaid on both sides of Indian Creek Waters of Deep River Beginning at a Stake in the plantation where Comfort Powell now lives on the line of Nathaniell Powell, deceased, and running thence with his line North crossing the Creek seventy five chains to a Pine thence West fifty chains crossing a fork of the Creek to a White Oak thence South crossing another fork of the Creek seventy five chains to a White Oak on the said Powell's line thence on his line East fifty chains to the first Station containing three hundred and seventy five acres be the same more or less ( It being a tract of land granted to the said William Barber by the Earl Granville's agents by Deed duly executed bearing date the ninth day of December in the year one thousand seven hundred and sixty two Recorded in the County Court of Orange and registered in the Register's Office of said County in Book I, page 215 ).

of the other part Witnesseth that the said Moses Barber for and in consideration of twenty
pounds Specie to him in hand paid by the said Richard Barber.......doth grant, bargain,
sell, alien, enfeoff, convey and perpetually confirm unto the said Richard Barber his heirs
and assigns forever a certain Parcel or Tract of Land........Beginning at a Pine in the old line
upon the North Prong of Indian Creek running South two ( aut_ ? ) and eight chains and a
half to a Gum where it corners then up the said Creek eight chains and a half to Richard
Barber's old line then along the said line for the complement containing nine acres be it  more
or less.....

This Indenture made this twenty eighth day of October one thousand seven hundred and ninety one between William Barber of Chatham County and State of North Carolina of the one part and John Story of Hallifax County and State aforesaid of the other part Witnesseth that the said William Barber for and in consideration of the sum of fifty pounds lawful money...............doth grant, alien, release.......all that Tract or Parcel of land on the North Prong of the Indian Creek on the South side of the said Creek on William Dunking's line in aforesaid County including all or part of two surveys originally by Joseph Edmondson & Drewry Andrews Beginning at a line and running East ninety nine poles to a Spanish Oak in the said Edmondson's old survey thence North to a Pine in the above mentioned Drewry Andrews old survey thence East to a Post Oak it being the original corner tree thence South to a Pine in the said old survey thence West along a dividing line of agreement between said William Barber & John Andrews to a Hickory in the aforesaid Joseph Edmondson line down said line South to a Gum from thence up the Creek the various courses to the first Station containing two hundred and seventy three acres be the same more or less..........In witness whereof the above William Barber with his wife Silva Barber hath hereunto set their hands and seals the day and year first above written, signed, sealed and delivered.

Agreeable to an order of the County Court of Chatham issued at November Term 1802, we the undersigned, being noticed and sworn to divide and appropriate the estate of SOLOMON CHAPMAN among his surviving heirs have made the apportionment as follows. JAMES CHAPMAN'S apportionment is the tract of land on the South side of CAPE FEAR River on  LICK CREEK supposed 277 acres formerly the property of JESSE SEE, he paying to REBECKAH CHAPMAN'S guardian, the sum of fifty five dollars and half.

ELIZABETH BARBER'S is the upper part of the Manor Plantation, supposed fifty acres, she paying to REBECKAH CHAPMAN'S guardian four dollars and half.

DAVID CHAPMAN'S is the tract formerly the property of COL. THOMAS CLABURN of LICK CREEK supposed three hundred acres, he paying to REBECKAH CHAPMAN three dollars & half.

DEBURY CHAPMAN'S is the part of Manor Tract below the Widow's Dower, supposed fifty acres, he paying to REBECKAH CHAPMAN'S guardian four and a half dollars.

REBECKAH CHAPMAN'S is the tract of land on CULIAN'S ? BRANCH supposed one hundred and sixty six acres together with the moneu arising from each share, say 22 1/2 dollars.

DOLLY CHAPMAN'S is the island in CAPE FEAR RIVER opposite the Manor Tract. Say her part forty two acres, she paying to REBECKAH CHAPMAN'S guardian 72 1/2 $, seventy two and half dollars.

Given under our hands and seals this 27th December in the year of Our Lord Christ 1802.

This Indenture made the tenth day of April in the year of Our Lord one thousand eight hundred  between Murdock McKenzie & Archibald McBryde, surviving partners of Murdock, McKenzie & Company of the one part & Zadock Barber of the County of Chatham and State of North Carolina of the other part Witnesseth that for and in consideration of the sum of ninety eight dollars and forty six cents said Zadock Barber in hand paid by the said Murdock & Archibald as surviving partners aforesaid at and before the sealing and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof he doth hereby acknowledge & therefore doth release, acquit and discharge the said Murdock McKenzie & Archibald McBryde their executors and administrators. By these presents he the said Zadock Barber hath granted, bargained, sold, aliened and confirmed unto the said Murdock McKenzie as surviving partners aforesaid and their heirs and assigns a certain piece or parcel of land Situate, lying and being in the County of Chatham & State aforesaid bounded as followeth by the lands of John Stinson, William L. Hayes, John Perry & others on the North Prong of Indian Creek being the plantation whereon he now lives and his part or share of his mother's Dower containing in the whole fifty one acres and two thirds of an acre be the same more or less. But this Deed is to be voided if the
said Zadock Barber on or before the 1st June next pays or cause to be paid to the said Murdock & Archibald the aforesaid sum of ninety eight dollars and forty six cents with interest from the first day of January last............

Zadock Barber this day release and bequeath unto John Perry in behalf of his wife
Elizabeth seventeen and a half acres of land , it being her distributive share of her mother's
dower, Beginning at a small Gum said Barber's corner on the Watering Prong running thence
South six degrees West to a Pine in Haynes line, thence East and Round to include her full
share of said dower.

Note: A one page genealogy, which I obtained from the Lee County ( NC ) Genealogical
and Historical Society's vertical file says  that Moses Barber was one of three brothers
( names not given ) who came from England to the United States in the early 1700s and who
migrated from New England to North Carolina. He lived in Chatham County and died in 1795.
He and his wife, Elizabeth, this document says, had two children, Zadock and a daughter,
name unknown, who married William Perry.

Is this Elizabeth married to John Perry, Zadock's sister ? Note that this is an 1826 document
and Moses' wife Elizabeth is said to have died in 1825. Did John Perry's Elizabeth receive
the dower of the Elizabeth who died in 1825 and was Zadock's mother ?

Witnesseth that the said Zadock Barber for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred and thirty dollars to him in hand paid by the said Archibald McBryde.......hath given, granted and
bargained....unto the said Archibald McBryde all that tract or parcel of land Situate, lying and being in the County of Chatham on the South side of the Middle Prong of Indian Creek  bounded by the lands of the estate of John Stinson, deceased and the lands of the estate of William L. Hayes, deceased and the lands of John Perry,being the plantation whereon the said Zadock Barber formerly lived and including his mother's former right of Dower in the same containing in the whole by estimation fifty one acres and two thirds of an acre..........

TEMPE BARBER, age 60, is a Head of Household, with the following members

It appears that ARCHIBALD is TEMPE'S son and ELIZABETH and MARTHA are his wife and daughter, respectively. WESLEY, too, would be TEMPIE'S son. REBECCA BEAL was TEMPIE'S granddaughter through her daughter LYDIA who married ELISHA BEAL.

This census establishes TEMPE'S birth year as 1790. There is a family tree which gives 1787 as her birth year as 1787.

This family tree names the children of TEMPE and ZADOCK as being

   TYSON   b. 1814
   JANE    b. 1817
   LYDIA    b. 1819
   WILLIAM   b. 1821
   ARCHIBALD   b. 1824
   WESLEY B.   b. 1827

The use of the name WILLIAM raises the possibility of a family connection  with that WILLIAM
BARBER found earlier in this document. JOHN T. and WESLEY B. each named a son WILLIAM. Neither the children nor the grandchildren of TEMPE and ZADOCK were named RICHARD.

But it must be recognized that WILLIAM BARBER, the son of TEMPIE and ZADOCK, could have been named after WILLIAM STINSON. See the entry above for 10 April 1820. WILLIAM STINSON was witness to a Deed wherein ZADOCK BARBER sold a piece of land.

From these birth dates, one imagines that TEMPE and ZADOCK were married perhaps a year or two before 1808. TEMPE would have been 15 or 18 in 1808, depending upon which birth date you accept.

Note: TEMPE'S name may have been TEMPERANCE. One of her grandchildren, a daughter of her son ARCHIBALD ( ARCHY ) had the name TEMPERANCE. Her name is found in the Chatham County 1860 Census.
