1. James Madison
1 Burke, born 5 Mar 1813 in NC; died 12 Mar 1894 in Collin Co., TX; buried
Mar 1894 in Mugg Cemetery, Weston, Collin Co, TX. He married on 3 Aug 1834
in Chatham Co., NC, Sarah "Sallie" Merrick (Deming) Burke, born 21 Aug
1819 in NC; died 30 Jan 1910 in Collin Co., TX; buried in Mugg Cemetery,
Weston, Collin Co, Texas, daughter of Fisher A. Deming and Elizabeth Alston
(Jones) Deming.

Family Bible; Probate documents for Milliner Burke in Chatham Co, NC; letters
of Celia Burke Freeman mentioning her brother, James. Eliza Jane (Burke)
Watson's Family Bible gives the full name "James Madison".
James and
Sallie lived in Collin County, Texas, and owned property along the banks
of Honey Creek, a stream which flows through the center of the county.
The Agriculture Census of 1870 showed J.Burke with over 350 acres of land
including 30 acres of woodland. James Burke had 12 horses, 7 milk cows
and 4 working oxen plus 40 head of cattle and 40 swine. He raised spring
wheat, Indian corn, oats, sweet potatoes and a little cotton. He probably
kept bees since the census showed he had 70 pounds of honey produced on
his farm.
James Burke's
father was probably William Burke, son of Milliner Burke and Mary Grant.
We know the siblings for James and have letters written by his sister,
Celia, mentioning her brothers. There is even a diary account of a visit
from James Burke of Texas to his sister, Celia, in Ohio. Celia doesn't
name her father, probably because he is deceased at the time of the letter
writing. Milliner Burke's Will was probated in 1818 and listed his children.
Celia mentions her grandfather, Milliner, and her uncle Milliner Burke.
At this time, we have assumed Celia's and James' father was William, the
oldest son of Milliner.

"Sallie" Merrick DEMING
Sallie Deming
was born in Chathem County, North Carolina, where she married at the age
of 15. She and her husband, James M. Burke, traveled into Tennessee where
they lived from about 1840 to about 1846. Then they moved to Jefferson
County, Arkansas. They lived in Arkansas for 10 years more, then made the
move to Texas when that state was opening up for more settlers.
Sallie Deming
Burke bore 14 children and lived to the age of 91 years. She and her husband
are buried at Mugg Cemetery which is near the small town of Weston in Collin
County. Mugg Cemetery is a well-kept old cemetery which is still used for
a few local funerals.
Sallie's
ancestors were very early settlers of Wethersfield, Hartford County, Connecticut.
John Deming is first shown in the town records of 1636. He married Honor
Treat and had 10 children who lived to adulthood. Sallie Deming Burke's
father was Fisher Deming, the 3Great Grandson of John Deming of Wethersfield.
Fisher Deming married Elizabeth Alston Jones who descends from the North
Carolina Alston line and the Sugar Jones line of Granville Co, NC.

There is no tombstone for her at Mugg Cemetery. Death Certificate gives
that as the place of burial. There is blank space in the area around Isaac

She is not listed in the Mugg Cemetery roster so we believe there never
was a tombstone for her. She died in 1936 during the Depression and a tombstone

The Texas
Agriculture Census for 1860 & 1870 show some interesting things about
Isaac Franklin's farming operation. He owned land along Honey Creek in
Collin County. In 1860 he had 130 acres of which 110 were woodland and
valued at $1200. By 1870 his value was $3,000.
In 1860 he
had 3 horses, 6 milch cows and 15 swine. In 1870 he had 7 horses, 3 cows
and 8 other cattle plus 6 swine. His crops in 1860 were Wheat, Rye, Indian
Corn and Oats. In 1870 he had 30 bushels of spring wheat, 45 bushels of
winter wheat, 600 bushels of corn and 15 pounds of tobacco plus 2 bales
of cotton, 30 bushels of sweet potatoes, 180 pounds of butter, 3 bales
of Hay and 90 animals slaughtered.

36 ii Emma
C3 Franklin, born Jan 1870 in Collin Co., TX; died aft. 1920.
Emma married Andrew Jackson Douglas, Jr., as his second wife. He was called
"Jack". Emma's sister, Ardie May, married Robert Paschal Douglas but these
two Douglas families were not related. The Andrew Jackson Douglass
family came to Collin county about the same time as the Hamilton Douglass
family. One came from Missouri and the other from Tennessee. About the
time of the Civil War all of the Douglass families dropped the double "s"
spelling of the name. No one knows why. The Andrew Jackson Douglass
& Hamilton Douglass families are tied by marriage three ways: by Emma's
marriage to Jack, Jr.; by the marriage of Hamilton Douglass, Jr., to Nancy
Stewart, a grandniece of Andrew, Sr's wife, Mary Adamson; and by the marriage
of Eldon Gill Douglas, grandson of Hamilton, Sr., and Lura Bogan, Great-granddaughter
of Andrew, Sr.

1920; Tx. & Ok. Marriage Records; Tx. & Ok. Death Records and Death
Certificates. Family records and personal knowledge. Ardie was rather
tall for a woman of her generation. She managed to lean slightly when photographs
were made so she wouldn't appear taller than her husband. She was a religious
person and would not allow drinking in her home. She and Pat were
very loving parents and grandparents. When Aubrey first attended school
at age 6, he was frightened by the teacher whipping a boy in front of the
whole class. When he told his parents about it, they just found a different
school for him to attend instead of insisting he go where he was afraid.
When Ardie first found out she had breast cancer, her family said she sat
and read her Bible. She was brave about her illness and bore her pain well
even tho' she was sick a long time and the cancer had spread before she
was finally at peace and died.
