During the dreadful Civil War while Lt. Carrol Tucker and David
Stanley Petty were off in the war, Martha Petty Tucker and Grissy
Petty
were living together in Giles County Tenn. struggling to survive
farming on the home front with their children. The Union troops were
all around. Some of the Yankee soldiers attempted to take Martha's
horse that she used for plowing. Determined to keep her horse, she
locked her arms around the horse's neck and clung to it for dear life,
as they severely beat her and the horse, dragging her all the way
back to their camp. When the commanding officer observed what was
happening, he commanded them to
release her & give her horse back. That horse was critical
for their survival and she knew it.
