Woody Family of Orange, Chatham & Alamance

John III, Woody, B 1715 possibly Boston, Suffolk Co. MA., D 1762 Orange Co., NC. thought to be buried at Spring MM Cemetery east of the town of Snow Camp.

Father & Mother:
(possibly) John II Woody - (name unkn), Married; Mary Lindley B 9-4-1717 at New Garden MM London Grove Chester Co., PA. D 5-21-1795 at Blount Co., TN.

Believed to be buried at:
Friendsville Cemetery. Married 12-27-1738 at St. George Parish, Baltimore Co., ( or Harford Co.) Maryland. Mary was disowned by Quakers for marrying out of unity.

Mary Lindley was dau of James Lindley B 4-16-1681, in Ballinaclash, Wicklow Co., Ireland; D 10-13-1726, London Grove twp, Chester Co., PA & his wife Eleanor Parke, B 1-2-1684 in County Carlow Ireland.
Both buried at the New Garden MM Chester Co. PA.,
They were married in Kilconnor, Carlow Co., Ireland.

Mary was a sister to Thomas Lindley B1706 D1781, founder of the Lindley family in Orange County, NC.
Lived; Mass. (possibly) to Maryland about 1737 to Haw River in N.C. about 1750-55, Ancestral Line;

John III built ferry on the Haw River NC. which was used during the American Revolution.
John III changed the Woody name from Woody, Woodie, Woode, Woodee and other variations.
According to a North Carolina relative some of the land John III took on the Haw River is still owned by members of the Woody family.
John and Mary Lindley had 9 children; John IV, William, Robert, James, Samuel, Joshua, Joseph, Mary and Ruth. See Note # 18.

John (III) Woody bought 60 acres in Baltimore Co. MD. is 1739 and sold it in 1754 and gave his occupation as "House Carpenter".
Likely moved to Orange Co. NC. about that time He was listed in the Orange Co. NC. tax list in 1755. His brother-in-law Thomas Lindley had moved there in 1753.
In 1753 John received a land grant of 374 acres from the State of NC. This grant was located on the Haw river just above Mary’s creek on the western side of the river.

Two sons moved to Indiana. Two sons and the two daughters are thought to have stayed in lived in Orange and Chatham county with out ever moving as the counties where formed.

My g grandfather Franklin H. Woody left Slier City about 1853-54, spent about 2 year in Indianapolis IN. Started for California, got sick in Utah, ended up an early pioneer, country clerk, lawyer and Judge in what is now Missoula, Montana.
