Schulken Brothers
The name of Schulken has been so long identified with the merchandising business in Columbus county, and more especially in Whiteville that it is perhaps more or less hereditary that W W and F J Schulken operate one of the leading hardware stores in Columbus county. They grew up with the business, their father, the late H F Schulken, having been engaged in the general merchandising enterprise for a number of years here. Schulken Brothers Hardware Store here carries a full line of hardware, frigidaires, radios, electrical and plumbing supplies, furniture and the largest supply of paint to be found in Columbus county. Both the Schulken brothers were born and reared in Whiteville.

The Braxton Auto Service, situated on the corner of South Madison and Pecan Streets, here serves a wide territory. It has an up-to-date line of tires and accessories, an efficient repair shop, and is the authorized dealer here for the Plymouth, Willis and Graham automobiles. S L Braxton, a native of Scotland Neck, but who has lived in Whiteville for the past ten years, is owner and proprietor of the establishment. It was started in April, 1931, and has been successfully operating since that time. This company has the agency for Goodyear tires, Mr Braxton is vitally interested in the up-building of Whiteville, and the local tobacco market.

Handy Hardware House
Thomas L Ballard is the manager of the Handy Hardware House here, established in 1924. He came here from Lillington eight years ago to take charge of the local store, which is a chain operating in several parts of the state. This establishment carries a full line of building material and hardware.
Mr. Ballard has been in the hardware game for 11 years, having been located at Lillington and Fayetteville before coming to Whiteville.

Serving three counties with the best quality groceries, the firm of Rose Grocery employs the use of three trucks to distribute their merchandise in Bladen, Columbus and Brunswick. Headquarters of Rose Grocery is in Marion, SC. The store in Whiteville was opened two years ago. R N Johnson is manager of the local branch. The firm employs eight salesmen, truck drivers and office workers in the store here.

Myers Warehouse of Chadbourn
After twenty years in the warehouse business in Chadbourn, Myers Warehouse promises farmers of this section "the best of services and the highest market prices for their weed that can be found anywhere." "We assure you," said George Myers Jr, who is affiliated at the warehouse with his father, who is well-known in Columbus county, "without fear of contradiction that tobacco sold in Chadbourn will bring as much if not more than any other market." The Myers warehouse is one of the largest warehouses in Chadbourn, one of the leading markets in the South Carolina belt.


Guiton Drug Store
For more than seven years the Guiton Drug Store has served the people of Whiteville, and Columbus, Brunswick and Bladen counties. It is the Rexall Store, which enjoys a national reputation based on an association with leading concerns all over the United States. Dr J A Guiton is the owner and proprietor. He is a native of Robeson county, having been born and reared at St Pauls. He rerceived his pharmaceutical license in 1925 after graduation from the University of North Carolina.

L A Mears
Mears Hardward
The name of Ellis Meares has so long been connected with the merchandising business in Columbus county, that its mention generally calls to mind this line of business. He has a hardware, furniture and general store at Fair Bluff, and hardware stores at Whiteville, Angler and Proctorville. His son, L A Meares, is manager of the local store, which was opened here two years ago. This store carries a full line of hardware, farm implements and building materials. Mr Meares is a native of Columbus county, having been born and reared in the western section, at Fair Bluff. The Ellis Meares Hardware establishment is located on South Madison Street.

J S Mann
Mann Department Store
J S Mann takes the same pride in Whiteville that he takes in his store which is one of Whiteville's most modern and up-to-date. Mr Mann has been active for many years in Whiteville's civic affairs, being a Mason, Rotarian and officer in the local post of the American Legion. Mr Mann served in the army 22 months during the World War. In the thirteen years that Mr Mann has called Whiteville "home" he has seen Whiteville experience remarkable growth. With a force of eight sales people, Mann's Store is one of the leaders in this section and carries a complete line of ladies' and men's ready-to-wear as well as children's clothes.

Leinwand's Department Store
Phillip Leinwand is the owner and proprietor of the Leinwand Department Store here. A native of Austria, he migrated to this country at an early age.
He has been in the merchandising business practically all of his life, and employs a total of about six clerks during the rush tobacco season. This store carries a fun line of ladies', men's and children's ready-to-wear and shoes, and is situated on Madison Street south of the railroad.

The Garrell Brother Grocery Store situated on South Madison Street, handles both wholesale and retail groceries. The store was established here in September, 1925, and since that time has been enjoying a splendid business. J F Garrell is sole owner and proprietor of the establishment. He is a native of this county, having been born and reared in the Iron Hill section of the county.
In the wholesale capacity the merchants of Columbus, Bladen and Brunswick counties are visited regularly by representatives of the company in order that the trade may enjoy the first-class goods which the store has stocked.

Wilson Implement Company
J W Wilson is president and general manager of the Wilson Implement Company, sole authorized representative of the International Harvester Company.
Associated with Mr Wilson is Seth L Smith as secretary and treasurer of the company. This concern has long been the Columbus farmers' headquarters for harvest equipment, farm implements, trucks and tractors, and general hardware. This company has been in operation here since October, 1932, at which time it was incorporated and received its charter. Mr Wilson is a native of Virginia.

N Kramer
Kramers Department Store. A native of Lithuania, Mr Kramer is a veteran in the merchandising business. He has been in business for himself for the past 8 years, and has been connected with this work for many years longer than that. The local department store, which is situated on South Madison Street, recently underwent extensive renovations, and now has one of the most attractive store fronts in this section of the state.

S L Fuller
Carrying on a business which was founded by his father, S L Fuller has been operating a livestock concern in Whiteville for the past six years. His father, the late L K Fuller, had carried on the business for 19 years prior to that time.
This concern is still doing business with the son of the founder in charge. One finds it hard to meet a more alert, and active man than Mr Fuller. He always manifests an interest in the public welfare and civic progress. Mr Fuller is a native of Randolph county, but has lived practically all of his life in Whiteville.

A J Krahnke
The Krahnke Pressing Club has been a familiar name around Whiteville for a long time. Before A J Krahnke established the business which he now operates on South Madison Street he and his father, the late F H Krahnke, were in business together. To Mr Krahnke goes the credit of being the first man to establish a dry cleaning plant in the county. He went into business for himself in 1930 soon afte the death of his father. Associated with him in the operation of the business are his wife, Mrs Krahnke, and C C Stophel Jr and three other employees. Mr Krahnke is a native of Wilmington, having been born and reared there.

The R B McRoy and Company operates a large wholesale and retail grocery business in Columbus county and surrounding territory. One of the oldest establishments in the county, it was originated about the year 1880, by the late J D Maultsby, and in 1907 the name was changed to the McRoy Grocery Company when the late R B McRoy joined the firm.
At the present time, John C Maultsby is manager of the wholesale and retail business, and J A Maultsby Jr, is secretary and treasurer. The former is a Florida native, while the latter was born and reared in Whiteville.

Cricket Service Station
Up on the courthouse square A W Fowler has been operating the Cricket Service Station for the past six years. The Cricket carries a full line of gasolines, oils and a stock of merchandise. The station sells Gulf products.
Each year it has been serving thousands of satisfied motorists. Mr Fowler, its manager, is a native of Tabor City, but has been in Whiteville for several years. The Cricket was established about 1928. The Cricket carries all Good Gulf products and Goodrich tires in addition to a small stock of merchandise and cold drinks of all description.
