WHITEVILLE - Elaine Meyers Nasso died Saturday, April 3, 2004 at Columbus County Hospital.

F.M. FOWLER
CLARENDON - F.M. Fowler, 70, died Wednesday, April 14, 2004 at his residence.
Born May 21, 1933, he was the son of the late Jiley and Ruby Fowler. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mavis Fowler; brothers: J.D., Malcolm, Ovalee, Brook and Rudolph; and a sister Iola Fowler Stanley who also died April 14.
Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City.
He is survived by his wife, Kathryn White Fowler; three sons: Ricky Fowler and Randy Fowler, both of Clarendon and Chucky Fowler of Hallsboro; a daughter: Sheila Sykes of Clarendon; two sisters: Estelle Fowler of Brunswick and Lucille Truelove of Wilmington; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

IOLA FOWLER STANLEY
CLARENDON - Iola Fowler Stanley, 75, died Wednesday, April 14, 2004 at her residence.
Born July 29, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Jiley and Ruby Fowler. She was preceded in death by her husband Herbert Stanley; brothers: J.D., Malcolm, Ovalee, Brook, Rudolph and F.M., who also died April 14.
She is survived by a daughter: Sharon S. Grainger of Clarendon; a granddaughter; and two sisters: Estelle Fowler of Brunswick and Lucille Truelove of Wilmington.
Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City.

ALFREDA S JOHNSON
Excellent cook, quilter and crocheter
SHALLOTTE - Alfreda Shaw Johnson, 87, devoted wife and mother, passed away April 14, 2004.
Alfreda was preceded in death by her parents, Willie and Mary Jean Shaw of Evergreen; her husband, Ewen A. Johnson (1980); a sister, Flora Jane Griffin; a brother, Walter Shaw; and her beloved twin brother, Alfred Shaw, with whom she had a special bond.
She will be remembered for her love of people, church, community, family and flowers. She never met a stranger. She was a loving Aunt Tead or Miss Alfreda to everyone whose life she touched. She was a fantastic cook, she crocheted afghans, tablecloths and blankets for family and friends and made quilts for all her children and grandchildren.
Alfreda battled Alzheimer-s disease for many years. The family wishes to thank all of the team at the Palms of Autumn Care in Shallotte, who helped care for our Mama.
She is survived by her seven children: William Johnson and wife Maureen of Evergreen, Linda J. Mohr and husband Larry of Charleston, S.C., Wayne Johnson and wife Judy of Charlotte, Ron Johnson of Wilmington, Ed Johnson and wife Jeannie of Lumberton, Larry Johnson and wife Jinny of College Station, Texas, Cynthia Johnson of Louisburg; a sister: Mary Frances Inman of Evergreen; a brother: Richard Shaw of Evergreen; her beloved grandchildren: Christopher Johnson, Andrea Mohr, Jill Johnson, Jamison Johnson, Jennings Johnson, Travis Johnson and Jessica Johnson.
Final rites were conducted Friday, April 16 at Evergreen Baptist Church by the Rev. Ricky Donaldson and Charles Brust. Interment was in the Evergreen Cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Pallbearers were Wayne Williamson, Walt Williamson, Phil Inman, David Inman, Robbie Bridger and George Dillard.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Evergreen Baptist Church, Evergreen, N.C. 28438.

SALLY J STEVENSON
CONWAY, SC - Sally Jane Stevenson, 72, died Thursday, April 15, 2004 at her home.
A native of Horry County, she was the daughter of the late Jessie Ardell Sellers and Lettie Mae Smith Sellers and was the widow of Russell Daniel Stevenson.
Final rites were conducted Saturday, April 17 in the Inman Chapel by the Reverends Wayne Montgomery and Donald Lewis. Interment was in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.
She is survived by two sons: Joseph Frank Wright Sr. of Aynor, S.C. and David Henry Sellers of Butner; two sisters: Retha Belle Cartrette of Loris, S.C. and Allie Hardwick of Conway, S.C.

RALEIGH - Duewan Pait, 76, died Thursday, April 15, 2004 at his residence.
Final rites were conducted Sunday, April 18 at Bethel Emmanuel Holiness Church by the Reverends Larry T. Kelly and Conrad Hall. Interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery. Lewis Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
He is survived by two sons: Mike Pait of Maryland and Tony Pait of Virginia; a daughter: Diane Stefanic of Maryland; a sister: Lucille Crowder of Raleigh; and four grandchildren.

TABOR CITY - Pearlie Jane Russ Norris, 92, died Saturday, April 17, 2004 in Loris Community Hospital.
She was the daughter of the late John Russ and Annie Hughes Russ and the widow of Arthur Jackson Norris.
Final rites will be conducted Tuesday, April 20 at 11 a.m. in the Inman Funeral Chapel. Inman Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
She is survived by a daughter: Lorene Spivey and husband Dwain of North Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Monday night from 7-9 p.m. at Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City.

TABOR CITY - Emma Mae Graham, 70, of the Iron Hill Community died Saturday, April 17, 2004 in Loris Community Hospital, Loris, S.C.
Final rites will be conducted Thursday, April 22 at 2 p.m. at Flag Patch Baptist Church, Loris, S.C., by the Rev. Paul Stevenson. Interment will be in Flag Patch Cemetery. Westside Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
She is survived by her husband, Willie Graham of the home; two daughters: Wanda -Keith- Thomas of the Iron Hill community of Tabor City and Maetta Graham of the home; eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren.

LORIS, S.C. - Lovie Missouri Benton Booth, 77, died Monday, April 19, 2004 at her residence following an illness.
She was born Aug. 20, 1926 in Hampstead, a daughter of the late Lewis N. Benton and Lovie C. Hewitt Benton. She was of the Baptist faith, a homemaker, a loving mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Julius Thurman Booth; a sister: Mildred Aragon of Raton, N.M.; and a brother: Goley Benton of Laurinburg.
Graveside services were conducted Wednesday, April 21 at Carter Cemetery in Loris, S.C. by the Rev. Mark Stevens. Ward Funeral Home of Loris, S.C. handled the arrangements.
She is survived by five daughters: Julie Geraldine Booth Holmes and Saundra Booth Porter, both of Loris, S.C., Frankie Booth McPherson of Clarendon, Myra Lynn Booth of the home and Mary Burma Booth Nations of Union, S.C.; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; three brothers: Bonair Benton of Wilmington, William Benton of Maxton and Gilbert Benton of Laurinburg; three sisters: Margaret Medlin of Marion, S.C., Delta Britt of Maxton and Betty Wilkerson of Grand Junction, Colo.

CLARKTON - Elsie McCulloch Campbell, 70, died Monday, April 19, 2004 at Cape Fear Valley Hospital.
She was born in Bladen County and was a retired insurance agent.
Final rites were conducted Wednesday, April 21 at First Baptist Church of Clarkton by James Bartlett, Dr. Paul Layton and Annell Waldron. Interment was in Brown Marsh Church Cemetery, Clarkton. Gaskins Funeral Home of Clarkton handled the arrangements.
She is survived by her husband, James Julian Campbell two daughters: Cheryl Campbell Henderson of Fayetteville and Renee Campbell Horton of Elizabethtown; a brother: Hobson McCullough of Council; a sister: Sarah Louise Quick of Clarkton; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

LEM 'GARRETT' WINESETT JR
Editor, writer and printer, river pilot, outdoorsman and photographer
GEORGETOWN, S.C. - Lem -Garrett- Winesett Jr., 68, died Monday, April 19, 2004 at his residence.
He was born July 6, 1935 in Lumberton, a son of Evelyn Perkins Winesett and the late Lemuel Winesett. He was a former commercial printer with Winesett Printing Company in Marion and formerly owned and edited the -Wild Flower- newspaper in Murrells Inlet. He was a pilot boat operator for Georgetown Bar and Harbor Pilots Association for many years, was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed photography, writing and good conversation.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
He is survived by his mother of Marion; a son: Garrett -Bud- Winesett of Seabrook, S.C.; three daughters: Angie Watkins of Georgetown, Ginny Callum of Surfside Beach and Jo Collins of Augusta, Ga.; seven grandchildren; a brother: John Dean Winesett of Landrum, S.C.; two sisters: Kay Grant of Greenville, S.C. and Mitzi Winesett of Columbia, S.C.

RURAL HALL - Fred Dilworth Jackson, 78, passed away Friday, April 16, 2004 at Forsyth Medical Center.
He was born Jan. 22, 1926 in Stokes County to Elmer Reid Jackson and Maude McKinney Jackson. He was retired from Piedmont Airlines after many years of service as a welder. He was a lifelong member of Stoney Ridge Baptist Church.
Final rites were conducted Sunday, April 18 at Stoney Ridge Baptist Church by the Reverends Yates K. Wilkinson Jr. and John Rogers. Interment was in the church cemetery. Cox-Needham Funeral Home of Pilot Mountain handled the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Doris George Jackson of the home; a daughter and husband: Terri and Coburn Powell of Whiteville; a son and wife: Timothy Mark and Teresa Galyean Jackson of King; three grandchildren: Jess Powell, Anne Powell and Rachel Powell; a granddog: Lady; and a sister and husband: Morah -Mo- Jackson and Jack Roberts.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Roland Jackson, Odell Jackson and Wayne Jackson; and a sister: Lena Jackson Turney.

WHITEVILLE - Curtis Lee Thompson, 49, died Wednesday, April 21, 2004.
He was born in Scotland County, the son of Marvin Thompson of Lumberton and the late Lula Reynolds Thompson. He owned and operated Thompson-s Radiator Shop.
Final rites will be conducted Friday, April 23 at 2 p.m. at Peacock-s Chapel In The Pines. Interment will be in Peacock-s Columbus Memorial Park. Peacock Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
He is survived by his father, Marvin Thompson; two brothers: Bradley Wayne Thompson of Lumberton and Andy L. Thompson of Greenville, S.C.; a sister: Diana Hinds of Lumberton; and special friend: Patricia Andrews.

Final rites will be conducted Sunday, April 25 at 3 p.m. at McKenzie Mortuary Chapel. Interment will be in Whiteville Memorial Cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary is handling the arrangements.
She is survived by a daughter: Mary Jane Harrelson Hardee of Tabor City; a son: Charles Edward Harrelson of Whiteville; two brothers: Graham Walker of Chadbourn and Leonard Walker of Whiteville; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

WHITEVILLE - Mattie Walker Harrelson Renn, 92, died Wednesday, April 21, 2004.
She was the daughter of the late Henry Walker Sr. and Lee Penny Walker and the widow of the Rev. James Edward Harrelson. She was a homemaker and taught Sunday school at Whiteville Freewill Baptist Church for many years. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Emma Lee Harrelson Cribb.
Final rites were conducted Sunday, April 25 at McKenzie Mortuary Chapel by the Rev. John Guyton of Clarkton. Interment was in Whiteville Memorial Cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary handled the arrangements.
She is survived by a daughter: Mary Jane Harrelson Hardee of Tabor City; a son: Charles Edward Harrelson of Whiteville; two brothers: Graham Walker of Chadbourn and Leonard Walker of Whiteville; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

REV ROBERT MARLEY
Retired missionary, minister, teacher, Veteran
LAKE WACCAMAW - The Rev. Robert Paul Marley, 77, a retired missionary, minister and teacher, died Wednesday, April 21, 2004 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington after an unexpected illness.
Mr. Marley was born March 1, 1927 in Willard, one of 12 children of the late Robert Kemp Marley and Blannie Wheeler Marley and served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He received an associate degree from Wilmington College (UNCW) and a bachelor-s degree from Bob Jones University. He also attended the International Preparatory Institute in San Antonio, Texas. He was an ordained minister with the Church of God in Cleveland, Tenn. for 53 years and served as a missionary in El Salvador, Guatemala and Costa Rica for more than 15 years. He served in numerous pastorates in North Carolina, Maryland and Florida and taught at Siler City Community College.
Mr. Marley is survived by his wife of 46 years, Margaret Edge Marley of Lake Waccamaw; two daughters: Deborah Wilson and husband Robert of Waxhaw and Sharon Brown and husband Gene of Marion, S.C.; three grandchildren: Andrew and Elizabeth Gonzalez and Nicholas Brown, all of Marion, S.C.; two step-grandchildren: Ronald Brown of Ft. Detrick, Md. and Lisa Stephens of Florence, S.C.; four brothers: Ray Marley of Advance, Isaac Marley and wife Faye of Currie, Clyde Marley and wife Elizabeth of Mechanicsville, Va. and J.T. Marley and wife Pat of Castle Hayne; three sisters: Hazel Mills of Chesapeake, Va., Ruby Barnhill of Wilmington and Eunice Small and husband Jeff of Wilmington. He was preceded in death by four brothers: George Daniel Marley, Ivey Kemp Marley and two infant brothers.
Final rites were conducted Saturday, April 24 at the Whiteville Church of God. Interment was in Hillcrest Cemetery in Lake Waccamaw. McKenzie Mortuary handled the arrangements.

GREENSBORO - George Washington Brownlee Jr., 43, formerly of Fair Bluff, died Monday, April 19, 2004 at his home.
Final rites were conducted Saturday, April 24 at Hargett Funeral Home Chapel in Greensboro by the Rev. Maamon Owens. Interment was in Piedmount Memorial Park in Greensboro. Hargett Funeral Home handled the arrangements. S & L Funeral Home of Fair Bluff is announcing for the family.
He is survived by his wife, Sorena Brownlee; his father: George Washington Brownlee Sr.; daughters: Mamie Brownlee and Lilly Brownlee, both of the home; a son: Hakeem Brownlee of Philadelphia, Pa.; five sisters: Dianna Brownlee of Fair Bluff, Ruth Mae Jones of Philadelphia, Pa., Audrey Bolden of Greenwood, S.C., Mamie Ruth Brownlee of Miami, Fla. and Shelia Hardee of Durford, S.C.; and three brothers: Jimmy and Billy Brownlee, both of Fair Bluff and Norman Brownlee of Greenville, S.C.

IDA T 'DIXIE' CLARKE
Audiovisual educator, church worker, gardener
DEWITT, NY - Ida 'Dixie' Townsend Clarke, 96, passed away March 23, 2004.
A native of Fair Bluff, she was a graduate of East Carolina University, Columbia University of New York and later attended the University of Chicago. As a teacher, and later as a supervisor of audiovisual education, she influenced several generations of children in the North Carolina public schools.
She was a member of Pebble Hill Presbyterian Church and received an honorary life membership in Presbyterian Women of the Presbyterian Church, USA. She was active in teaching Sunday school and leading Bible study for more than 30 years. Gardening was one of her greatest joys.
She is survived by a son: Kenneth of DeWitt, N.Y.; three sisters: Celia Lou Norris of Raleigh, Fannie Grey Richardson of Fair Bluff and Mary Belle Thurston of Nashville, Tenn.; and a brother: retired Lt. Col. Joseph B. Townsend of Raleigh. She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Rutherford -Rud- Clarke.
A memorial service and burial will be held in Powell Cemetery in Fair Bluff Saturday, May 15 at 2 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a charity of one-s choice.

JAMES M 'BLACK' CREECH

WHITEVILLE - James Milton -Black- Creech, 60, died Sunday, April 25, 2004 at UNC Hospitals of Chapel Hill.
He was born Nov. 8, 1943 in Columbus County, the son of the late Alfred James Creech and Annie Mae Sikes Creech. He owned and operated Creech Auto Sales.
Graveside services will be conducted Wednesday, April 28 at 11 a.m. at Peacock-s Columbus Memorial Park by the Rev. Stephen Bailey. Peacock Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
He is survived by a daughter, Beverly Creech Thompson of Whiteville; three brothers: William Creech of Garner, Jesse Creech and Phil Creech, both of Whiteville; two sisters: Patsy Eason and Sherry Jordan, both of Whiteville; and two grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, April 28 from 7-8:30 p.m. at Peacock-s Chapel In The Pines.

He was the son of Danny and Saundra Bullard Nobles of Cerro Gordo. He was owner/operator of Day Star Embroidery and Screen Printing, formerly of Cerro Gordo.
Final rites will be conducted Tuesday, April 27 at 3 p.m. at Chadbourn Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Reverends Jim Skinner and Jeff Brown. Interment will be in Porter Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery, Cerro Gordo. Worthington Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by a sister: Amanda Nobles of the home; maternal grandfather: James -Peck- Bullard of Cerro Gordo; and paternal grandmother: Margaret Todd Nobles of Fair Bluff.
Pallbearers will be Matthew Bullard, Tanner Memory, Chad Dudney, Wren Williamson, Allen Cartrette, Brad Williamson, David Enzor, Andy Miller, Avis Littles and Jeremy Benton.
