ELIZABETHTOWN - Rosetta Meares, 81, of Clarkton, died Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004 at Bladen County Hospital.
Final rites will be conducted Saturday, Sept. 4 at 12 p.m. at Piney Grove AME Zion Church, Clarkton, by the Rev. Gordon Griffin. Interment will be in the Clarkton Community Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
She is survived by a daughter, Betty McMillian of Springfield Gardens, N.Y.; and a son: Franklin Meares of Clarkton.
Viewing will be at the funeral home Friday from noon until 8 p.m. Viewing will be at the church Saturday, one hour prior to the service and again following the service.
Friends may visit the family at the home of Franklin Meares, 1546 N.C. 211 West, Clarkton.

BLADENBORO - Cynthia Denise Freeman, 48, died Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004 at Columbus County Hospital.
She was a retail sales manager.
Final rites will be conducted Saturday, Sept. 4 at 1 p.m. at Booker T. Washington Elementary School gym by the Rev. Leonard Royal. Interment will be in the Pone Family Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
She is survived by her husband, Earl Freeman of Clarkton; a daughter: Kendra D. Brown of Bladenboro; her mother: Willa M. Brown of Bladenboro; three sisters: Gloria Swindell, Willa Gray and Charmette Simpson, all of Wyandanch, N.Y., Jennifer Aasiyabey of California and Latonja Brown of Bladenboro; three brothers: Cheyenne Brown of Detroit, Mich., Vernon Brown and Plummer Brown III, both of Wyandach, N.Y.; a grandmother: Lorice Blackwell of Clarkton; three stepsons: Bonnie Freeman, Christopher Freeman and Frederick Freeman, all of Clarkton; and a stepdaughter: Sheila Cromartie of Lumberton.
Viewing will be at the funeral home Friday from noon until 8 p.m. and Saturday from 10-11 a.m. Viewing will be at the school Saturday, one hour prior to the service and again following the service.
The family will receive friends Friday from 6-7 p.m. at Peoples Funeral Chapel in Whiteville.

ROBERT C KINLAW SR
DUBLIN - Robert Carl Kinlaw Sr., 64, died Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004 at Wake Medical Center, Raleigh.
He was the son of the late Furney Kinlaw and Vera Belle Kinlaw.
Final rites were conducted Wednesday, Sept. 1 at Gaskins Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Lewis Forsythe. Interment was in Community Baptist Church Cemetery, Bladenboro. Gaskins Funeral Home of Clarkton handled the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Ursula Kinlaw; two sons: Robert Carl Kinlaw Jr. of Middlesex and Michael Kinlaw of Dublin; four sisters: Inez Pallosi of St. Pauls, Christine Nendias, Faye Chester and Margaret Labele, all of Elizabethtown; three brothers: Memory Kinlaw of St. Pauls, William J. Kinlaw of South Carolina and Dennis Carl Kinlaw of New Jersey; and three grandchildren.

LONGS, S.C. - Elsie Lee Miller, formerly of Dorchester, Mass., died Thursday, Aug. 26, 2004 at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center, Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Final rites were conducted Wednesday, Sept. 1 from Ocean View Missionary Baptist Association Building at Sunset Beach by the Rev. Douglas Moss eulogizing. Interment was in Pleasant View Cemetery. Smith Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.
She is survived by two daughters: Tanisha Gadson and Nicola Simmons of Longs, S.C.; her mother: Esterline Alberta Miller of Whiteville; six sisters: Lendora Johnson of Shallotte, Gloria Miller of Boston, Mass., Linda Joe Miller and Sylvia Johnson, both of Whiteville, Merita Frink and Rosa Lee Vereen, both of Calabash; seven brothers: Al Miller of Shallotte, Jimmy Miller of Longs, S.C., Edward Miller and Jerome Johnson of Boston, Mass., Zimmie Frink of Loris, S.C. and Marvin Miller and Leroy Bryant, both of Calabash; stepmother: Nonie Miller of Calabash; and two grandchildren.

JAMES D FORT SR
Former Clarkton mayor, businessman
CLARKTON -- James Dwight Fort, Sr., 89, passed away on Monday, Aug. 30, 2004 at peace with death as he was with life.
He was born in the Keener Community of Sampson County Aug. 11, 1915, a son of the late John Abner Fort and Mittie Fisher Fort.  He was preceded in death by a brother, John Abner Fort Jr. and a sister Ruth Fort Parsons.
Throughout his life he had several vocations including; agriculture, lumber, movie theater, real estate and automotive.  He was a member of the Clarkton United Methodist Church.  He was also a member of numerous civic organizations in Clarkton and Bladen County and served several terms as mayor of Clarkton.  In his free time he enjoyed traveling, gardening, golfing and woodworking.
Survivors include his loving wife of 65 years, Elizabeth -Lib- Darden Fort; two sons James Dwight Fort, Jr. of Clarkton and Stephen Ross Fort of Wilmington; a sister Lauretta Fort Smith of Greensboro; grandchildren Jennifer Ross Fort, David Stephen Fort, Julia Fort Tripp and husband Harold Dave Tripp, and James Fisher Fort.
A graveside service will be held at Clarkton Cemetery at 4 p.m. Thursday Sept. 2. Gaskins Funeral Home of Clarkton is handling the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to the Clarkton United Methodist Church or the Clarkton Rescue Squad.

FAIR BLUFF - Sadie Miller Rowell, 77, died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2004 at Columbus County Hospital.
She was born in Robeson County, the daughter of the late Dougle and Sallie Miller. She was a homemaker.
Final rites were conducted Thursday, Sept. 2 at Meares Funeral Home by the Rev. Neill Smith. Interment was in Powell Cemetery. Meares Funeral Home of Fair Bluff handled the arrangements.
She is survived by a sister, Dovie M. Prince of Lexington.

MARCELLE T PRINCE
WHITEVILLE - Marcelle Turbeville Prince, 52, died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2004 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice Center in Wilmington.
She was the daughter of the late Clyde and Janie Spivey Turbeville and was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Whiteville.
Final rites were conducted Thursday, Sept. 2 at First Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Paul D. Woodall Jr. Interment was in Whiteville Memorial Cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary handled the arrangements.
She is survived by her husband, Kelly Prince of the home; a daughter: Bonnie Futrelle and husband Kenny of Kinston; a son: Byran Prince and wife Tisha of Wilmington; stepmother: Mary Turbeville; stepsister: Helen Ganus and husband Ed of Milwaukee, Wis.; stepbrothers: Wesly Ward of Whiteville and Vernon Ward and wife Mary Ann of Shallotte; sister-in-law: Jeanne Hamilton of Lake Waccamaw; brother-in-law: David Prince of Cerro Gordo; grandsons: Zack Marshburn and Hunter Futrelle, both of Kinston and McAben Prince of Wilmington; and several nieces and nephews.

A native of Columbus County, she was the daughter of the late Bright and Jennie Spivey Stephens and was the widow of Garland Duncan.
Final rites were conducted Saturday, Sept. 4 in the Inman Chapel by the Rev. Billy Winburn. Interment was in the Hinson Cemetery, Clarendon. Inman Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
She is survived by a son, Roger Duncan of Chadbourn; two brothers: Dewey Stephens and M.J. Stephens, both of Tabor City; a sister: Estelle Keen of Tabor City; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

WHITEVILLE - Rena Creech Vaughn, 92, died Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004 at Liberty Commons of Whiteville.
She was the daughter of the late Joseph E. Creech and Cordelia Jernigan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas -Tom- Vaughn and a son, James -Buddy- Vaughn. She was a homemaker and was a member of White Marsh Baptist Church.
Final rites will be conducted Tuesday, Sept. 7 at 11 a.m. at McKenzie Mortuary Chapel by the Rev. Carroll Fonvielle. Interment will be in Whiteville Memorial Cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary is handling the arrangements.

LORIS, S.C. - Lunette S. Suggs, 73, entered into eternal rest early Friday morning, Sept. 3, 2004 at Loris Community Hospital.
She was born July 31, 1931 in Horry County, a daughter of the late William James -Jim- Sarvis and Lutie Tyler Sarvis. She was a member of Live Oak Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher for many years. She was a homemaker and a loving mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Audie W. Suggs and a brother, Bowden Sarvis.
Final rites were conducted Sunday, Sept. 5 at Live Oak Baptist Church by the Rev. Steve Nobles. Interment was in Cane Branch Baptist Church Cemetery. Ward Funeral Home of Loris handled the arrangements.
She is survived by five children: Gwen Floyd and her husband Russell of Loris, S.C., William T. -Bill- Suggs and his wife Wanda of Loris, S.C., Janet Graham and her husband Furman of Conway, S.C., Kathy Enzor and her husband Keith of Fair Bluff and Chad Suggs of Greensboro; a sister: Lester Holt and her husband Dr. Winfred Holt of Loris, S.C.; five grandchildren: Barry Suggs and his wife Tracey, Kevin Suggs, Angela Graham, Colin Floyd and Alan Enzor; and one great-grandchild: Carter Suggs.

WHITEVILLE - Ruth Louise Cowan, 84, died Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004 at Columbus County Hospital.
She was the daughter of the late Hugh Cowan and Annie Lou Inman. She was retired from a 42-year banking career, having worked at Waccamaw Bank and retired as a vice-president of United Carolina Bank. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Whiteville.
Final rites will be conducted Tuesday, Sept. 7 at 3 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church by the Rev Jim Dickson. Interment will be in Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary is handling the arrangements.
She is survived by three cousins: Margaret Baldwin of Chadbourn, Grace Hughes of Austin, Texas and Carl S. Sewell of Evans, Ga.; and three dedicated caregivers: Gerldine Blake, Alice Pope and Ruth Governor.

Farmer, Veteran
WHITEVILLE - Cletus Aaron Neill, 80, died Friday, Sept. 3, 2004 at his residence.
He was a veteran of WWII, having served in the U.S. Army where he participated in the Italian Campaign and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was the son of the late George Calvin and Emma Parks Neill.
Final rites were conducted Sunday, Sept. 5 at Worthington Funeral Home by the Rev. Robert Rattz. Interment was in Whiteville Memorial Cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Lizzie Nobles Neill of the home; a son: Calvin Arron Neill of Leland; two daughters: Ella Neill Wade of Whiteville and Margaret Neill Herring of Greenville, Tenn.; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were George Benton, Norwood Bowen, James Horne, Wayne Horne, Donald Neill and Danny Nobles.

CERRO GORDO - Ola Jane Spivey Blackwell, 84, died Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004 at Columbus County Hospital.
She was the daughter of the late Rowland and Lela Mae Norris Spivey and the widow of Howard Blackwell.
Final rites were conducted Saturday, Sept. 4 at Worthington Funeral Home by the Reverends Howard Fowler and Morris Milligan. Interment was in the Gowan Cemetery, Cerro Gordo. Worthington Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
She is survived by three daughters: Mary Jane McDonald of Raleigh, Brenda B. Norris of Whiteville and Carol B. Turbeville of Clarkton; three sons: Charlie M. Blackwell and James H. Blackwell, both of Cerro Gordo and Billy Ray Blackwell of Tabor City; 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
Pallbearers were Charlie Blackwell, Dean Blackwell, Scott Blackwell, Wayne Griffin, Jeffery McDonald and Greg Norris.

Final rites were conducted Saturday, Sept. 3 from Big Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Leo Stevenson. Interment was in Galloway Cemetery. Smith Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
He is survived by his children: Loretta Hankins of Supply, Arnetha Johnson of Woodleaf, Corine Hewett and Louvenia Cox, both of Bolivia, Jarvis Hankins, Sharon Hankins and Marty Hankins, all of Supply and Lemuel Boone of Chadbourn; and a brother: Donald Hankins of Supply.

LEXINGTON - Donnie Cecil Dudney, 69, died Friday, Sept. 3, 2004 at his home.
He was born in Columbus County on Dec. 27, 1934, the son of Troy Francis Dudney and Neppie Lou Watts Dudney. He was a retired park superintendent at Forest Hill Memorial Park Cemetery with 26 years of service and was -Host of Good Friends- at the Wrinkle Room. He was preceded in death by a sister, Virgie Little.
Final rites were conducted Monday, Sept. 6 at Davidson Funeral Home Lexington Chapel by the Rev. Max Shoaf. Interment was in Forest Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. Davidson Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Dudney of the home; two sons: Donnie Dudney and Bobby Dudney, both of Lexington; two grandchildren; two brothers: J.B. Dudney and Lloyd Dudney, both of Lumberton; and three sisters: Edie Mae Brewer of Lexington, Elease Holder of Winston-Salem and Shirley Butler of Chadbourn.

DELCO - Mary Carter Peterson, 85, died peacefully Monday, Sept. 6, 2004 in the Lower Cape Fear Hospice and LifeCare Center, after an extended illness.
She was born Nov. 1, 1918 in Acme to the late Riley Carter and Viola Lowery Carter. Her husband, Hubert Vintson Peterson Sr. and a brother, Frances Carter, preceded her in death. She was a faithful member of Livingston Baptist Church for all of her adult life.
Final rites will be conducted Thursday, Sept. 9 at 3 p.m. at Livingston Baptist Church by the Reverends Mark Ward and Richard Wade. Interment will be in the church cemetery. His grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Service of Wilmington is handling the arrangements.

Born in Pender County, Mr. Johnston was the son of the late James Matthew Johnston and wife Estelle Carr Johnston. His wife, Frankie Wood Johnston also preceded him in death. He was a member of Wallace Presbyterian Church, was a Christian man full of humor, smiles and lots of love for his family. His family feels truly blessed to have had him in their lives for so many years.

He was born Dec. 19, 1921 in Columbus County, the son of the late Lonnie and Sadie Jordan Hammond and is the widower of Opal Harrelson Hammond. He was a member of Mishop Springs United Methodist Church and a veteran of WWII, having served in the U.S. Navy. He was a retired truck driver and farmer.
Final rites with military honors will be conducted Friday, Sept. 10 at 11 a.m. at Peacock-s Chapel In The Pines by the Rev. Robert Ratz. Interment will be in Peacock-s Columbus Memorial Park. Peacock Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

She was was the daughter of the late Mary Helen Rackley Hales and Alexander M. Hales of Bladenboro. A cum laude graduate of Wake Forest University, she formerly taught Braille, French and history at Governor Morehead School for the Blind. Before her retirement, she was project leader for the technology services division of the N.C. administrative office of the courts in Raleigh.
Final rites will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 10 at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Raleigh. Interment will be at Pinecrest Cemetery in Bladenboro at 3:30 p.m. Friday. Brown-Wynne Funeral Home of Raleigh is handling the arrangements.

She was the daughter of the late Lee Stevens and Lissie Lowery McGee. She was a member of Highest Praise Church and was employed with Sprint as a group chief operator for 30 years.

Born in Wilmington and raised in Chadbourn, he was a son of the late Thomas S. and Maudie Glasgow Lewis. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, retired independent publisher representative, Army veteran of WWII and the Korean War where he reached the rank of Captain, past commander of the American Legion, the VFW and the National Guard in Bishopville, S.C.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Zylphia Lane Ruffin Lewis.
Final rites were conducted Saturday, Sept. 11 from First Baptist Church by the Rev. Dale Warren. Interment was in Piedmont Cemetery. Norton Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

She was born Feb. 10, 1946 in New Hanover County, the daughter of Elizabeth Riddick Howe of Whiteville and the late Joseph R. Wells. She was a member of Whiteville United Methodist Church and a member of the church choir. She grew up in Whiteville and moved to Charlotte where she resided for 20 years and then returned to Whiteville. She was a lab technician in Charlotte and worked at Subsational in Whiteville.
Final rites were conducted Sunday, Sept. 12 at Whiteville United Methodist Church by the Reverends David Benson and C.B. Owens. Interment was in Peacock-s Columbus Memorial Park. Peacock Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

GREENSBORO - Kathleen Soles, 86, died Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004 at Moses Cone Extended Care Center.
The oldest of four children, she was born Aug. 26, 1918 in Whiteville, to the late John William and Margaret Watts Soles. She was an honors graduate of Whiteville High School and attended Flora McDonald College before transferring and graduating from Women-s College (UNC-G) in 1940. After college she taught high school in Roxboro before returning to Women-s College and UNC for business courses. During WWII, she worked at Camp Davis in Burgaw and at the Army base in Greensboro. Following the war, she began her business career in the Greensboro City Manager-s office, ultimately retiring in 1984 as director of the city personnel office. She was a life member of the American Association of University Women where she received several honors. She was a past member of Sedgefield Country Club and Starmount Country Club. She was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church. She enjoyed traveling all over the world and particularly loved the beach where she was an accomplished fisherwoman. Known as Aunt Kathy or AK to many, she held a special affection for children and young people and loved keeping abreast of current styles and trends. She lived life to its fullest and made countless friends wherever she went.
A funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, Sept. 14 at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Chapel. Burial will follow in Whiteville Memorial Gardens at 3 p.m. Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home of Greensboro is handling the arrangements.
She is survived by her brother, William Roger Soles of Greensboro; a sister: Hazel S. CONCORD - Zelma Grantham Spears, 75, died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2004 at her home.
Mrs. Spears was born May 4, 1929 in Whiteville to the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Erdman Grantham of Fairmont. After graduating from Fairmont High School, she attended Flora Mac Donald College where she received a bachelor of music degree. A longtime educator for the state, she taught in Lumberton and Concord where she later became cultural arts director for the Concord City Schools. She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church where she served as children-s choir director, handbell director, deacon and elder.
A memorial service was held Friday, Sept. 10 at First Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Dr. Todd Hobbie. A private inurnment service was held by the family. Wilkinson Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
She is survived by her husband, Carl L. FRITCH, TEXAS - Thomas Kent Marshall, 68, died Sunday, Sept. 12, 2004 in Amarillo, Texas.
He was born April 14, 1936 in Hurt, Va. Marshall-s family moved to Whiteville when he was a child and he graduated from Whiteville High School in 1954.
He had formerly lived in Amarillo for 30 years and had lived in Fritch for one year. He was an electrician for IBEW Local #602.  He was preceded in death by two brothers: Lloyd Marshall and Michael Marshall; and a sister: Dorothy Powell of Brunswick.
Graveside services will be conducted Friday, Sept. 17 at 10:30 a.m. at Westlawn Memorial Park in Borger, Texas by the Rev. Travis Shannon, pastor of Golden Pathway in Amarillo. Interment will be under the direction of Minton/Chatwell Funeral Directors of Fritch, Texas.

He was born in Columbus County May 22, 1939, the son of Mable Sasser Canady Smith and the late George Washington Canady. He was formerly employed with AC&I Acoustical Ceiling of Wilmington. He owned and operated C & H Ceilings in Green Sea, S.C. and Chadbourn. He was formerly employed with Peacock Funeral Home and was a former member of the Whiteville Jaycees. He formerly owned and operated Canady-s Jewelry in Whiteville and attended Chadbourn Church of God.
Final rites were conducted Sunday, Sept. 19 at Peacock-s Chapel In The Pines by the Rev. Timothy Fowler and the Rev. Dr. Corbin Cooper. Interment was in Peacock-s Columbus Memorial Park. Peacock Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - Bob Peacock, 84, husband of Dot Peacock of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2004 in a local hospital.
He was born March 18, 1920 in Appling County, Ga., the third of 12 children born to the Rev. Augustus and Ella Peacock. He married Dot Edmunds of Chadbourn on Oct. 1, 1943. The family lived in Chadbourn before moving to Mt. Pleasant, S.C. in 1957. Bob and Dot owned Peacock Construction Company for more than 20 years before retiring and opening Peacock Custom Frames.
Final rites were conducted Saturday, Sept. 18 in the First Baptist Church of Mt. Pleasant. Interment was at Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens. J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. handled the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dot; three daughters: Karen Asbury of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., Debi Paglia and husband Al of Irmo, S.C. and Carol Pooser and husband David of Mt. WILMINGTON --Evelyn Bolling Fox, 82, died Monday, Sept. 20, 2004 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.
She was born July 19, 1922 in Winston-Salem, the daughter of the late Willie Webster and Mattie Henderson Bolling. She and her husband lived in Wilmington since 1948. She was a charter member of Windemere Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday School for many years and taught a senior ladies' Bible class, which was her great joy.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 24, in Windemere Presbyterian Church by Dr. Roland Banks. Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel is handling the arrangements.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Leon Fox of Wilmington; three sons: Leon -Lonnie - Fox, Jr. and wife Ann of Lake Waccamaw, Donald Fox and wife Frieda of Houston, Texas, David Fox and wife Lisa of Allen, Texas; a daughter, Chesca Fox and husband Louis Daniel Duval III of Littleton, Mass.; four grandchildren: Amy Schmitzer of Wake Forest, Beth Fields of Supply, Jeffrey and Laura Fox of Texas; two great grandchildren: Kate Schmitzer and Anna Fields; two sisters: Helen Long of Denton, and Lois Rominger of Winston-Salem; a brother, Gerald Bolling of Massachusetts; and many nieces and nephews.

CHADBOURN - Paul A. Eissens completed his earthly journey Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004 at Liberty Commons in Whiteville.
He was born July 18, 1931 in Fulton, Ill. to John and Minnie Eissens. His parents, five brothers and one sister preceded him in death. One sister, Helen Wierema of Longmont, Colo. survives.
Mr. Eissens is also survived by his wife of 51 years, Annette Nobles Eissens; four sons: Dwayne and wife Paula of Chadbourn, David and wife Jeanie of Chadbourn, Jimmy Osborne of Raleigh, Billy and wife Lynne Rose of Goldsboro; two daughters: Renee and husband Steve Gilpin of Morehead City and Rachel and husband Randy Hayes of Jacksonville, Fla.; 11 grandchildren: Benjy Downing, Jeremy Eissens, Stephanie Eissens, all of Chapel Hill, Krista Downing of Outer Banks, Nathan Driggers of Bishopville, S.C., Bill Rose Jr., Summer Rose and Paul Rose, all of Goldsboro, Jonathan Driggers of Jacksonville, Fla., Chris and Greg Eissens of Chadbourn; and two great-grandchildren: Lilly Downing and Abbey Downing, both of Chapel Hill.
Mr. Eissens was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Marines. He was a dairy farmer for many years in Chadbourn and in later years farmed beef cattle. He was known for his great physical strength and especially his -big strong hands.- He was an active member of the Chadbourn Pentecostal Holiness Church since 1962. He served as a deacon for a period of 35 years, a Sunday school teacher and a faithful prayer warrior.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Chadbourn Pentecostal Holiness Church in Chadbourn Saturday, Sept. 25 at 2 p.m. by the Reverends Jim Skinner, Jim Forehand and Billy Rose. Interment will be in Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be Friday, Sept. 24 from 7-9 p.m. at Chadbourn Pentecostal Holiness Church. CHADBOURN - Clyde Henry Elliott, 80, died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004 at Cape Fear Valley Hospital, Fayetteville.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday Sept. 26 at 3 p.m. at Chadbourn United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jim Hines. Interment will be in Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
He was born in the China Grove community of Columbus County Aug. 16, 1924 to Henry Payne and Lillie Dale Ward Elliott. He was a graduate of Chadbourn High School (1941), Campbell Junior College and UNC-Chapel Hill with a degree in accounting. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII, participating in the European Campaign.
Clyde worked as a ticket marker on the tobacco auction market during the 50s and later went to work at the ASCS office in Whiteville for several years as their Chief Clerk and then went to work for Waccamaw Bank, later United Carolina Bank. After having advanced to vice-president and director of the Trust Department, he retired after 20 years. He was a life long member of Chadbourn United Methodist Church where he had served as chairman of the administrative board, Sunday school superintendent and teacher.
Mr. Elliott was elected mayor of Chadbourn in 1972, a member of the Columbus County Committee of 100, member of Gideon-s International, a past president for the Chadbourn Rotary Club and very active in the N.C. Strawberry Festival Quality Berry Contest Auction where he served as the auctioneer for many years.
He is survived by three sisters: Louise E. Davis of Fayetteville, Barbara E. Serral of Greenville, Tenn. and Joan Elliott of Chadbourn; and a very special friend, Eva W. Pope of Whiteville.
Pallbearers will be Fred H. Serral, Elliott A. Serral, Gilbert H. Taylor, Billy G. Noble, Stephen M. Smith and Earl Dutton.

He was retired owner, manager of Bell Electric Company in Tabor City, a member of Tabor City Presbyterian Church where he had served as a deacon and elder, treasurer of Myrtle Green Cemetery and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Grady Bell.

AARON SWINDELL JR
Veteran, foreman for Pfizer Corp.
WHITEVILLE -- Aaron Swindell Jr., 78, died at Columbus County Hospital Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004 after a lengthy illness.
He was born March 1, 1926, in Clarkton to the late Aaron and Bessie Lee Blue Swindell. He attended Booker T. Washington High School, graduating in 1944. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during the Korean Conflict, originally stationed aboard the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Marion in Norfolk, Va. Over time, he attained the rank of Radarman First Class. In May 1947, he married Naomi White.  Throughout their 57 years of marriage, the couple lived in Detroit, Mich. and New London, Conn. Religion had always played a central role in Aaron- s life. He came to God by accepting Jesus at Shiloh Baptist Church where he served as deacon.  He worked for many years as a line foreman for Pfizer Pharmaceuticals in Groton, Conn.  After his retirement, he and his wife moved to Whiteville to be near family and friends.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, Sept. 27 at Central Missionary Baptist Church. Interment was in Campground Cemetery. Smith Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Naomi; a daughter: Jessica V. Swindell of Washington, D.C.; three sons, William M. Swindell of Hartford, Conn., Aaron Swindell III of Jacksonville, Fla. and Alfred E. Swindell, of New London, Conn.; and two grandchildren.

She was a lifetime member of Union Grove PFWB Church. She was a loving daughter, mother, grandmother, sister and friend to all who knew her. Her loving smile will live on in the hearts of those who knew her.

BLADENBORO - Sallie Mae Thompson, 74, died Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004 at SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation of Elizabethtown.
She was previously employed as a hospital dietary aide.
Final rites will be conducted Saturday, Oct. 2 at 1 p.m. at Sandhill Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert Thompson. Interment will be in the Sandhill Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
She is survived by three daughters: Annette Virgil of Bladenboro, Effie Lewis of Chadbourn and Mary White of Elizabethtown; a son: Kenneth Thompson of Anchorage, Alaska; and a brother: Charlie Thompson of Baltimore, Md.
Viewing will be at the funeral home Friday from noon until 8 p.m. and Saturday from 10-11 a.m. Viewing will be at the church Saturday from 12-1 p.m. There will be no viewing after the service.

ELIZABETHTOWN - Tharp Bordeaux, 86, died Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004 at his home.
He was a retired farmer.
Final rites were conducted Wednesday, Sept. 29 at Dublin First Baptist Church by the Rev. Cameron McGill. Interment was in the Bordeaux Family Cemetery, Elizabethtown. Bladen Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Eunice Hayes Bordeaux; two sons: Floyd Bordeaux of Roanoke Rapids and Clyde Bordeaux of Elizabethtown; two brothers: Charlie Bordeaux of Elizabethtown and W.J. Bordeaux of Leland; three sisters: Rosa Wilson of Tar Heel, Margaret Sessoms of Elizabethtown and Ellen Ann Bain of Newport News, Va.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

WHITEVILLE - Larry Rome Slater, 48, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2004 at Columbus County Hospital.
He was born June 13, 1956 in Columbus County, the son of John and Debra Batchelor Slater. He was a safety coordinator with Georgia-Pacific for 23 years, coached Dixie Youth Baseball for 30 years and was a member of the Whiteville Optimist Club.
Final rites will be conducted Friday, Oct. 1 at 2 p.m. at Trinity Baptist Church by the Rev. Stephen Bailey. Interment will be in Peacock-s Columbus Memorial Park. Peacock Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Susan Rose Creech Slater; three sons: Gregory Slater, Timothy Slater and Michael Slater, all of Whiteville; a daughter: Angela Ivey of Whiteville; three brothers: John Slater of Leland, Craig Slater and Chris Slater, both of Winnabow; a sister: Jean Smith of Riegelwood; six grandchildren: Tyler Ivey, Christian Slater, Zachary Ivey, Brooklyn Slater, Mallory Slater and Marissa Ivey.

ROSA N RICHARDSON
LAKE WACCAMAW - Rosa Nell Richardson, 76, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2004.
She was born in Jacksonville, Fla., Feb. 23, 1928, the daughter of the late Robert Murray Thomas and Loie May Thomas. Her husband, Robert Randolph Richardson, and her son, Thomas Howard Richardson, preceded her in death.
Mrs. Richardson was a devoted member of the Lake Waccamaw Presbyterian Church and was a supporter of the Lake Waccamaw Library and Museum. She was loved by and cherished by her many friends at the Lake for over 50 years. All who knew her will miss her.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 2 at 3 p.m. at the Lake Waccamaw Presbyterian Church, led by Dr. David Walker. Interment will follow at the Lake Waccamaw Hillcrest Cemetery.
She is survived by her son: Robert R. Richardson Jr. and wife Leigh, of Colleyville, Texas; her daughter: Rebecca R. Bowles and husband Stephen, of Lake Waccamaw; her sister: Dorothy T. Tallent, of Jacksonville, Fla.; and her two grandsons: Jonathan and Christopher, of Colleyville, Texas. Other loving family members include Connie and Mark Moran, Ron and Cathy Richardson, Walter Ohlrich, the family of Jeff and Linda Olhrich, and Brett Bowles.
Pallbearers are John Corbett Jr., Ned Council, Jack Hooks, Graves Lewis, Dayton McLean, and Ivan Wilson.
Honorary pallbearers are Bob Aldrich, Jack Council, Dale McPherson, and June Stone.
