Conover Businessman

Bobby Eugene Matthews

Bobby Eugene Matthews was born the second child of seven to Robert and Metta Hefner Matthews. At the age of nine, he helped his father build their first home. He had a number of jobs, such as, usher at the old Canova Theater, operating a cuff machine at Warlong Glove, farming and driving equipment for the Frank Hollar farm. After a stint in the Army, and giving up the childhood dream of becoming a country-western singer, he honed his skill as a bricklayer, learning the craft from Luther Sipe. Ingeniously, he found jobs by following brick trucks to their destinations. In 1950, he married Frankie Moser, and their union produced six children. Together, with her father, Charlie Moser as a carpenter-bricklayer team and helped by Gus Palmer, he would form his new company. Frankie's knowledge of bookkeeping would solidify the team. Later, Bobby purchased the Canova Theater building, ironically, returning to the days of his childhood of going to the movies. Today the company is one of the most prestigious firms in the Southeast with offices in Conover and Charlotte.
