{"id":193,"date":"2010-03-22T00:03:18","date_gmt":"2010-03-22T00:03:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ncgenweb.us\/craven\/?p=193"},"modified":"2010-03-22T00:14:33","modified_gmt":"2010-03-22T00:14:33","slug":"new-bern-fire-museum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ncgenweb.us\/craven\/new-bern-fire-museum\/","title":{"rendered":"Dedication of New Bern Fire Museum 1957"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One day, while browsing the bookshelves of a second-hand bookstore, I found this pamphlet from the dedication of the New Bern Firemen&#8217;s Museum. \u00a0It appears to have been written just about that time (1957) and while small, has some interesting history about the museum.<\/p>\n<p>There are several components to the pamphlet:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An article discussing when the railroads came to New Bern<\/li>\n<li>brief info about the history of New Bern<\/li>\n<li>a tidbit about the almost name it got of &#8220;Bernberg&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>a history of the fire department written by Jack Honrine<\/li>\n<li>pictures of some of the old fire engines<\/li>\n<li>a history of New Bern&#8217;s worst fire (to that date).<\/li>\n<li>a history of the Battle of New Bern<\/li>\n<li>a description of the dedication services<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This fire described in the pamphlet started in the home of Henry Bryan, an African-American resident who lived on Kilmarnock street and would destroy 1,000 homes &amp; businesses in the city. \u00a0There was one death from the fire, an 105 year old African-American woman who lived on Cedar street.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t scan the pamphlet in color, but here is the front image in color<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ncgenweb.us\/craven\/files\/2010\/03\/newbernfiremuseum.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-196\" title=\"newbernfiremuseum\" src=\"http:\/\/ncgenweb.us\/craven\/files\/2010\/03\/newbernfiremuseum-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ncgenweb.us\/craven\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/newbernfiremuseum-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/ncgenweb.us\/craven\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/newbernfiremuseum.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You can access the pamphlet from the <a href=\"\/nc\/craven\/records\/misc\">Misc Records page<\/a> where you will be also able to download it if desired.<\/p>\n<p><em>To stay up-to-date with new information posted on the Craven County, NCGenWeb site, sign up for <a href=\"http:\/\/feedburner.google.com\/fb\/a\/mailverify?uri=CravenCountyNcgenweb&amp;loc=en_US\" target=\"_blank\">updates sent directly to your email<\/a> or subscribe to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncgenweb.us\/nc\/craven\/feed\" target=\"_blank\">RSS feed<\/a>. <\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One day, while browsing the bookshelves of a second-hand bookstore, I found this pamphlet from the dedication of the New Bern Firemen&#8217;s Museum. \u00a0It appears to have been written just about that time (1957) and while small, has some interesting history about the museum.
