Is anyone doing research on HAILLS, or some variation of that spelling?
If so, please contact me. I'm seeking a John R. HAILLS whose son John Lyde
Haills was born "in the Carolinas" in 1823. The family migrated
to Warren County (Vicksburg, MS), probably in the 1830's, where John R.
Haills died circa 1840. The "connection" to Cumberland County
is tenuous at best: I ran across a marriage between Thomas HAILLS and Sarah
Carter on 4/28/1811. Given the middle name of John R. Haills' son, "LYDE,"
it's possible there is a tie-in with a family by that name. Does any of
this dovetail with records in Cumberland County? Thanks.

Here are some of my problems and reasonings associated with Neil An
Rhuad Mor McNeill. The recent issue of the very good book Carolina Scots
by Douglas and Caroline Kelly stirred up some waters, and cleared some
others. One of the stirrings concerned what I had accumulated earlier on
the role of Neil the Red McNeill from other sources. The Kellys recognize
the existence of Neil Red McNeill on page 119 when they associate him with
Archibald Buie and some libertarians. Joseph A. G. Roussos, FSA Scot. in
his book The Argyll Colony: The Last Clan Gathering recognizes Neil the
Red McNeill on page 19 with the following: "Among the immigrants to
arrive in the first years was a sailor turned adventurer named Neill Red
McNeill. He brought another 350 Scots to Wilmington. .... They named him
An Ruadh Mor, meaning the big red one. ... His (companion) name was Archie
Buie." And Roussos again simply restates and and reaffirms the existence
of Neill the Red McNeill adding the fact that he may have named Barbecue
Creek. In evaluating the Kellys book, I discovered that many of the names
that I had obtained concerning Red Neill were identical with those of Black
Neill, another sailor turned landowner who also brought 350 Scots who may
have landed in Brunswick but Roussos says Wilmington. After gleaning out
the duplications I have the following McNeills whose parentage is one or
the other or neither: Neil McNeill b. 1710 m. Isabella Simpson Isabella
McNeill m. Alexander Mc Neill Negolina McNeill m. Robert Stewart Lauchlin
McNeill m. Margaret Johnstone If anyone has any information on these people
and Neill the Red McNeill, I would sorely appreciate it.

I also descend from Daniel McNAIR of Richmond County, NC, through his
son, Gilbert McNAIR, and grandson, Daniel McNAIR ("Major", War
of 1812). The earliest appearance of the name Gilbert McNAIR in North Carolina
was a 1771 land patent in Cumberland County, but it is not clear whether
this Gilbert McNAIR is the the same person as the Gilbert NcNAIR, son of
Daniel McNAIR, of Richmond County later. [There were several Gilbert McNairs
in the vicinity by the 1790 census; at least one went to Georgia.] Several
McNAIRs were inhabitants of Cumberland County about 1780 who signed a petition
requesting that the name of the town of Cross Creek be changed to Upper
Campbellton and that it become the county seat. Any information about McNAIRs
of Cumberland County before 1800 will be helpful. A study of Anson County,
NC, records failed to find any evidence that my Daniel McNAIR and/or Gilbert
McNAIR had resided there prior to the formation of Richmond County. By
implication, Daniel McNAIR and his son, Gilbert McNAIR, later of Richmond
County, probably arrived from Scotland around 1770 or 1771 and settled
in either Bladen or Cumberland County.

I descend from Ambrose POWELL of Bladen and Robeson Counties, NC, who
appears to have been possibly a brother to Isaiah POWELL and Lewis POWELL,
sometimes spelled BOWELL, both of early Cumberland County records. Isaih
POWELL was the obvious father of Lewis POWELL, "Jr." (i.e., 2nd)
of Robeson County, who served in the Revolution from Bladen County (now
Robeson County). Lewis POWELL, Jr., said he was born in Bladen County in
1750. Isaiah POWELL obviously was a "charter resident" of Cumberland
County, residing there at the time the county was created. Lewis POWELL
("BOWELL") does not appear in records in Cumberland County until
the 1770s, though, when he signed the Oath of Allegiance, operated a Tavern,
and served as a Justice of the Peace. In DAR records he is called "Lewis
Powell, Sr." of Cumberland County, a Patriot. I believe he is the
same Lewis POWELL who owned land in Robeson County and appears to have
died there about 1798, leaving a widow, Catherine POWELL. There is a lot
of confusion in the literature about the several persons named Lewis POWELL
of Bladen, Cumberland, and Robeson Couties. I would like to correspond
with anyone who has an interest in these Powell names.

James MOORE also served in the Revolution as a soldier from Cumberland
County. He was born about 1762, possibly in Bertie Co., NC, but place of
birth is uncertain. He served a six month tour with the Cumberland County
militia, being discharged as a Lt. in 1781. After his military service
he went briefly to Bertie Co., NC, where his father was then residing.
He returned to Cumberland County after about 18 months, remaining in Cumberland
County until about 1794, when he relocated to Pendleton District, SC. About
1816, he relocated again to White County, Tennessee, where he resided in
the portion of that county that became Van Buren County. In 1841 he filed
his pension application from Van Buren County. As yet the parents and siblings
of James MOORE have not been identified. On the 1790 census of Fayetteville
town there was a James MOORE who appeared to have 10 children and 15 slaves.
This Moore family does not seem to be consistent with the 1800 census of
my James MOORE family in Pendleton District, SC, which had only four children,
all born after 1790. I will be most gratefull for any assistance received
about persons named James MOORE who resided in Cumberland County, NC, before
1800.

Isaac CARTER served in the American Revolution as a soldier from Cumberland
County. He stated he was born in Cumberland County about 1764. He served
three years, 15 days, in the Continental Line and one year in the NC Militia,
a total of four years, 15 days. He was a resident of Cumberland County
until about 1785, when he relocated to Orangeburg District, SC. He married
Nancy Young, probably in Orangeburg District, about 1785. They had 10 or
more children in SC before relocating in early 1810 to Pike County, Mississippi.
In his Pension Application, Isaac did not identify his parents or a brother
he mentioned. Any help in identifying Isaac Carter's parents, who should
have been residing in Cumberland County in the early 1760s, or his siblings,
will be greatly appreciated.

There was as second Isaac CARTER who served in the Revolution from North
Carolina who settled in Perry County, Mississippi. That family alleges
that their Isaac Carter was also from Cumberland County, NC. If anyone
can either prove or disprove that assertion, I would like very much to
see the proof. I suspect that the two R. W. veterans named Isaac CARTER
who migrated to Mississippi were confused by early family historians. I
have found records of an Isaac CARTER residing in Bladen County after the
war, after my own Isaac CARTER had relocated to South Carolina.

I descend from Daniel McNAIR who died in Richmond Co., NC, [now Scotland
County] about 1793, through his son, Gilbert McNair. There were McNairs
earlier in Cumberland and Bladen/Robeson Counties and I strongly suspect
those in Cumberland County were the proginitors of my McNairs in Richmond
County. Neil McNair married Mrs. Dugal McMullin and in 1761 was the administrator
of the estate of Dugal McMullin in Cumberland County. Archibald McNair
proved a deed in Cumberland County in 1764. John McNair appears in several
Cumberland County records in the 1770s. Gilbert McNair purchased land in
Cumberland County in 1775 and a Gilbert McNair was on a road crew in Cumberland
County in 1785 [proving he was not my ancestor, who was in Richmond County
at that time]. The name Daniel McNair also appears in Cumberland County
records beginning about 1785. I would like to correspond with anyone researching
these McNairs in Cumberland County, NC.

I descend from Ambrose POWELL (d. ca. 1814-1815, Robeson County, NC), Charles POWELL (resided Bladen/Robeson Counties, 1771 till 1798 or 1800, then relocated to Washington Co., GA), and James POWELL (born Bladen County, 1780, also to Washington Co., GA, before the 1800 census was taken in Bladen County). My Powell research suggests that Ambrose POWELL was probably related to Isaiah POWELL and Lewis POWELL of Bladen/ Robeson County, both of whom possibly resided in Cumberland County earlier.
The Cumberland County tax list for 1755 showed Isaiah Powell and William
Powell as tax payers. The Cumberland County tax list for 1767 showed Isaiah
Powell, Henry Powell, Stephen Powell, and Thomas Powell as tax payers.
Thomas Powell died about 1771, when estate papers were filed in Cumberland
County. Information about any of these POWELLS in Cumberland County will
be greatly appreciated.

few years before they settled in Orangeburg District, SC, where they remained

whom I presume were residents of Cumberland County, NC. Could he have been
