Gregor Carmichael McGregor, son of Malcolm and Mary (Carmichael) McGregor was born on January 8, 1824, in Cumberland County,
North Carolina. He attended Franklin Institute in Robeson County and studied medicine under Dr. Hector McLean. He later
entered New York University Medical School, graduating in 1851.
He practiced medicine in Cumberland County for a year, then moved to Austin County, Texas, in January, 1852, and located
his office at Industry. He remained in Industry for thirty-one years and was a member and president of the Washington County
Medical Society, the first medical organization in Texas. In 1873, McGregor retired from the practice of medicine and moved
to Waco where he became vice-president of the Waco State Bank. He was also a stockholder in the Waco Cotton Mills and the
Waco Savings Bank and owned tracts of farm land in and around Waco as well as in the western part of the state.
In 1859 he married Annie Portia Fordtran; they were the parents of four children. He died at Waco in 1902 and was buried
in the Oakwood cemetery. The town of McGregor in McLennan County was named for him.
