Alexander immigrated to Wilmington Ne in 1736. He kept a tavern in Wilmington, NC. In 1739 or 1740 he returned to Scotland and married Mary McNeill who died on the return voyage while at sea. Mary was the daughter of Hector McNeill of Ardelay and Elizabeth McTavish.
Alexander then married Flora McNeill after 1740 in Cumberland County NC. Flora was the daughter of Neill Dhu McNeill of Ardelay and Grissella Campbell. They had 6 children. After the death of Flora on Sept 2, 1855, he remarried 7 years later, to Jane Colvin on July 14, 1763. Jane was the daughter of Alexander Colvin and Margaret Robinson. Jane was born on September 20, 1740.
Alexander was one of the original Elders of the Bluff Church, organized in 1758 in Cumberland County, NC. During the American Revolution he was a Colonel of the Cumberland County Militia, a member of the Provincial Congress held at Hillsboro NC on August 21, 1775 and the Provincial Congress held at Halifax in April 1776.
