of
Riland & Hannah (Kruzan) Capps/Caps/Capts
We know that Riland Capts was in Vigo Co., Indiana by Sept. 1839 from this Currituck Co. deed----The Currituck website was set up just to give you information about folks that lived, worked and died there, however, this is a classic example of a family with origins in Currituck County but who moved westward and made their homes & fortunes in other states. Researchers, do not limit yourselves to one particular county or state when trying to find your ancestors!
Currituck Co., NC Deed Book 22; pg. 334 Riland CAPPS to Jesse W. DOXEY, September 14, 1839 - Riland CAPPS of the State of Indiana and County of Vigo and Jesse W. DOXEY of Currituck County for $126.00, 64 acres of land in Currituck county known by the names of Frost and Capps land, bounded by BRIGHT's line, William BRIGHT, James COWELL, Tully C. DOZIER. /s/ Riland (x - his mark) CAPPS. Witnesses, John LAW, E. M. HUNTINGDON. Sworn in the state of Indiana on October 9, 1839. E. M. HUNTINGDON. David WALLACE, Governor the state of Indiana. Wm. J. BROWN, Secretary of State. Currituck February Term, 1840. Registered March 21, 1840.
And we know from his Bible that Riland's parents were J. & Sarah/Sally Capts. We know from court records that "J. Capts" was actually John and that Sarah (maiden name unk.) became his widow before February 26, 1821. In 1823 she deeded her young son several personal items and 2 cows.

- Monday, February 26th 1821Currituck Co., NC Deed Book 16; pg. 99 I Sarah CAPPS for the natural love I bear unto my beloved Son Ryland CAPPS have granted unto him all my goods & chattles reserving the use of them during my life; 2 feather beds & furniture, 1 chest, 1 trunk, 1 table, 1 safe, 1 loom, 1 pot & 2 heiffers to have & hold after my death the goods chattles & personal estate. Witness: M. SIMMONS; Registered Feb. 11, 1823 [see actual deed]
The census records we have been able to uncover on Riland are below, however, we haven't been able to find him or his mother, Sarah, from 1830-1850. In 1830 Grainger Co., TN there was a Sarah Capps, born 1770-1780, who had a male in the home born 1810-1815 which would fit but there is no way to determine if this is Sarah Capps, widow of John Capps, or if it is someone entirely different.
