Transcriber's note: The names of the guardians, additional people providing securities (bondsmen) and the orphans are usually written more than once on each bond. In this paper, I have used the most complete form of each name available on each bond. These bonds are original documents and are signed by the guardians and other bondsmen. I have attempted to use the spelling of names as they appear in the signatures, but have not attempted to duplicate signatures. In other words, if a man signed his name "Thos. Jones" but the clerk wrote his name "Thomas E. Jones Jr." then I used the clerk's more complete form. If you need to know the exact signature of a signer of one of these bonds (to distinguish between two people of the same name, for example), please contact me and I will look it up for you. If you find any errors in this work, please let me know so that I can make the necessary changes.
Sample Guardian Bond
State of North Carolina,
Currituck County
Know all men by these presents, that we (names of bondsmen) are held and firmly bound unto his Excellency (name of Governor) Esquire, Governor, Captain
General and Commander in Chief of the State aforesaid, in the just and full sum of ($ amt. of
bond) lawful money of the State aforesaid, for which payment well and truly to be made, we bind
ourselves, our heirs, executors and administrators, jointly and severally, firmly by these presents.
Sealed with our Seals and dated this (date).
Whereas (name of guardian) hath been this day by the Worshipful Court of said County,
appointed Guardian to (name or names of "orphan/s"--underage or mentally incompetent
person/s) Orphan of (name of parent) deceased.
The condition of the above obligation is such, That if the said (name of guardian) Guardian as
aforesaid, shall well and truly discharge his Guardianship by taking care of and improving all the
estate belonging to the said Orphan and shall also settle his Guardian accounts with the Court of
said County, as is required by law, and that he will deliver up to the said (name of orphan/s)
Orphan aforesaid, when (he/she/they) shall attain to lawful age, all such estate as (he/she/they)
ought of right to be possessed of, or sooner if required, agreeable to the true intent and meaning
of an Act of the General Assembly, in such case made and provided, then, in that case, the above
Obligation to be void and of no effect, otherwise to be and remain in full force and virtue.

A March 29, 1830 record placed out of order in the book is a Sheriff's summons to William Doxey, guardian to Frances Morse orphan of Peter Morse, commanding Doxey to appear before the County Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions to renew his bond. Signed by S. Hall C.C.C.
