When Theodore de deBry made this engraving of John White's detailed map of the Outer Banks and the adjacent area, extending from Chesapeake Bay (Cheseoioc Sinus) to Cape Lookout, he published the most careful delineation made in the 16th century of any considerable part of the North American coastline.
