Raymond Earl WORLEY was born in Poplar Branch, NC on March 24, 1942.  He was a native of Currituck County, a graduate of Dr. W.T. Griggs High School in Poplar Branch, North Carolina,  Trooper WORLEY was a member of the North Carolina Highway Patrol who performed his duties admirably for 23 years, assigned to Troop A, District 1 in Northampton County.  On May 14, 1985, Trooper WORLEY lost his life in Roanoke Rapids, Halifax County in the performance of his duties.  He is buried in Zion Methodist Church Cemetery in Conway, Northampton Co., NC.  The North Carolina Highway Patrol and the citizens of Currituck County felt that it was important to keep alive the memory of this community-minded individual so the 2-mile section of NC 3 from Bertha to Poplar Branch was dedicated on January 8, 1993 as a memorial to Trooper Worley.  [see details of WORLEYs murder on the Officer Down Memorial Page]

NOTE from Roy Sawyer, Jr.
His mother was Wilma Daniels (Perry) (1920 - 2000).  She was a single mother.  (buried Austin Cem. Kitty Hawk)  She later married Carlis Lee Perry (1 May 1918 - 23 Dec 1990) and lived in Kitty Hawk.  When I was a child she worked at the amusement park in Nags Head where the merry go round was, and I always loved her dearly.  Later she lived at Coinjock and worked for Elmer and Pauline Woodard.  They lived much of his childhood with Wilma's parents: William Henry Daniels (24 Dec 1882 - 17 Dec 1959) (Powells Point Baptist Church and Dora Powers "Weedie" Daniels (27 Jan 1893 - 23 Jul 1983).  Mr. Henry and Ms. Weedie Daniels had 2 other daughters: Lila Mae Daniels (26 Oct 1913 - 23 Mar 2016) m. Wilbur Eris Waterfield (8 Oct 1917 - 19 May 1962) Dora Louise Daniels (1922 - 27 Jun 2017) m. Dempsey Walter Worley (12 Jun 1921 - 23 Sep 1992). *  I do not know the significance of Raymond Earl using the Worley last name and his aunt also being married to a Worley.
