Ballance / Jackson Album

William Edward Ballance (seen as Wm. Edmund in some records) was born October 7, 1880 in Aydlett, Currituck Co. and died Aug. 7, 1941 in Richmond, VA. [see obituary]. He was the son of Robert Ballance [1841-???? ] & Henrietta Lee/Leigh [1843-1925]. He married Annie Myrtle Bunch on Nov. 27, 1907 in Jarvisburg, NC and they had 6 children. Annie & William are buried at Poplar Branch Baptist Church Cemetery.
1) Elsie Lee Ballance - born Nov. 2, 1908 Poplar Branch, NC & died Sept. 30, 1965 [see obituary]. She married Ulrick Alexander Jackson in 1925. Ulrick was born in Peterboro, Canada on June 9, 1903 to George Frederick Jackson [1875-1906 see death record] & Elizabeth Jane "Jennie/Jean" McRae/McCrae [1874-1945]. Ulrick was baptized on June 29, 1903 except his first name was listed as Anthony but it's the same birth date and parents as seen in other records. By 1910 he was found in St. Joseph's Orphan Asylum in Rochester, New York probably due to the fact that his father died in 1906 when Ulrick was 3 years old. We know from Urick's obituary that he had an older brother named George R. Jackson who lived in San Pedro, CA in 1961. Ulrick and his wife, Elsie, are buried iat Westlawn Cemetery in Elizabeth City, Pasquotank Co., NC.
Elsie owned and operated the Poplar Branch Gunning Club out of their home from the early 1950s until her death in 1965. The house is located in Poplar Branch and was built by Daniel Corprew Lindsey in the 1850s--his son Daniel Wilson Lindsey lived there. Duck hunters boarded there during hunting season.
2) Robert Osborne Ballance - born Aug. 19, 1911 Poplar Branch, NC. He married Hilda Lucille Wise in Manteo, Dare Co., NC on May 18, 1935. Robert died on Feb. 13, 1975 in Norfolk, VA [see obituary] and is buried at Roanoke Island Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Manteo . HIlda was born in Stumpy Point, NC to Claude Esley Wise & Bertha Elma Meekins on April 9, 1914 and died May 17, 1988. She is buried in Manteo Cemetery. 3) Susan Ellis Ballance - born Oct. 6, 1913 at Poplar Branch, NC and died July 13, 1972 in Morehead City, Carteret Co., NC [see obituary]. She married 1st to Roscoe Dixon Palmer on June 7, 1941 in Littleton, Halifax Co., NC [see news clipping] and 2nd to Merritt Elwood Bridgman on April 11, 1948 in Havelock, Craven Co., NC. Merritt & Susan are buried in Gethsemane Memorial Park Gardens in Morehead City, NC 4) Lillie Henrietta Ballance - born Oct. 10, 1916 at Poplar Branch, NC. She graduated from Poplar Branch High School in 1933 and was crowned "Miss Currituck" in 1934. She married Earl Alvin Sanford [1913-1998] on Jan. 16, 1935. Lillie died Jan. 27, 2014 in Colonial Beach, VA [see obituary]. Lillie and Earl are buried in Oakland Baptist Church Cemetery in Owens, King George Co., VA
5) Hulda Lenora Ballance - born April 20, 1919 in Poplar Branch, NC. She married 1st Wilford Denny Wise in South Mills, Camden Co., NC on April 14, 1941. Wilford died Dec. 26, 1986. Hulda married 2nd William Hancock Riggs on Dec. 15, 1989. Hulda died Jan. 18, 2003 in Onslow Co., NC [see obituary]. They are both buried in Seaside Memorial Park Cemetery in Swansboro, Onslow Co., NC.
6) Ervin Marshall Ballance - born Nov. 28, 1927 on Poplar Branch, NC. He married Sadie Flo O'Neal [1938-1998] in Manteo, NC on Jan. 15, 1954 & they divorced in Polk, Co., FL in May 1960. Sadie later married Jack Ellis Bateman [1925-2012]. Ervin died in Elizabeth City, NC on June 11, 1995 [see obituary] |
