Enoch's parents, Stephen & Ann Forbes, are somewhat of a mystery. It is believed that Ann was the daughter of Lemuel Ball who, in 1860, made his will in Currituck County wherein he gives a life estate to his wife Frances and at her death a life estate to Stephen & Ann Forbes. After their deaths the land goes to Stephen & Ann's 2 sons, William O. Butler Forbes and Enoch Haywood Forbes. It is believed that Stephen & Ann, perhaps newly married, are living with Lemuel Ball in 1840. They are certainly living in the Lemuel Ball household in 1850 and 1860. It is assumed that Lemuel died between the time of making his will in June 1860 and Nov. 1865 when the will was probated. Lemuel's wife is not found in the 1870 census so she may have also died. Stephen & his family were in the Poplar Branch Twp. during the census years of 1870 & 1880. Enoch Haywood Forbes and his family lived in the Poplar Branch Twp. when the 1900 census was taken but by 1910 had moved to Morehead City in Carteret Co., NC. In 1920 the family lived in Greenville, Pitt County, NC. where the census was taken a little over a week before his death. If anyone knows who Stephen G. Forbes' parents are or if you have anything to add to this page, please e-mail me. |
