Pioneer Theater Flyer - 1975 |
In the 1976 book, Reflections by Donald & Carol McAdoo, Mr. George Creef [George Howard Creef] made the following statement: "My grandfather, George Washington Creef [Jr.] was a boat builder who designed and built the Hattie Creef to carry fish to the markets of Roanoke Island...My grandfather was a fun loving man who would occasionally indulge in "the spirits". At such times he became generous to a fault with his family. If my father, Herbert [Herbert Augustus Creef, Sr.], wanted some candy, granddaddy didn't go down to the store and buy him a bag of candy, he went down and bought him a barrel!....He had been away on a trip one time when he saw his first moving-picture show and enjoyed it. Since he couldn't get away very often to see movies he decided to buy the machinery and bring his own show to Manteo. He began the Pioneer Theater in 1918 when there was nothing but silent films and the price of a ticket was only ten cents...After my grandfather died in 1927 [actually 1928], my father kept the theater open during the Depression years by doing every job involved in the show himself. Since then, I've done every job in our theater and am still running it today...." [NOTE: Herbert A. Creef, Sr. died Mar. 25, 1960. His son, Herbert A. Creef, Jr. died in 2012. The theater today is owned by Herbert A. "Buddy" Creef, III.] |
