"Up the Road School" - Kitty Hawk 1911 |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
There were two school houses in Kitty Hawk Village in the early 1900's. One was called "Up the Road", located in the area where Joe Perry's old house stands and the Primitive Baptist Church. "Down the Road" school was closer to the entrance of the village near Elijah Baum Rd. Anyone wishing to attend school past the 7th grade were sent to Elizabeth City--most did not as their parents could not afford it. "Up the Road" had 2 classrooms and 2 teachers--one for the earlier grades and one for the older ones. If you can identify any of these children or teachers please drop me a note.
